What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lab Safety Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Lab Safety Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and risk assessment, typically supported by a degree in chemistry, biology, or environmental health and safety. Familiarity with safety management systems, hazardous materials handling, and certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or OSHA training are often required. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help foster a culture of safety and ensure effective training and emergency response. These skills are essential to minimize hazards, maintain regulatory compliance, and protect both personnel and research integrity in laboratory environments.

What are some common challenges a Lab Safety Manager faces when promoting a culture of safety within a research environment?

Lab Safety Managers often encounter resistance to change, especially when implementing new safety protocols or correcting long-standing practices. They must balance regulatory compliance with practical laboratory workflows, ensuring that safety measures do not impede scientific progress. Building strong relationships with researchers and staff is key, as the role requires ongoing communication, training, and sometimes conflict resolution to foster a proactive safety culture. Regular audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations are also part of their weekly routine, all while staying updated on evolving safety standards.

What does a Lab Safety Manager do?

A Lab Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring that laboratory environments comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations. They develop and implement safety protocols, conduct training for lab personnel, and perform regular inspections to identify and mitigate hazards. Their role also includes maintaining safety equipment, managing chemical inventories, and ensuring proper waste disposal. Lab Safety Managers play a crucial part in fostering a safe workplace and preventing accidents or incidents in the laboratory.

Curious and innovative problem solvers looking for the chance to meaningfully shape the future of cardiac health, our company, and your career

About This Role:

iRhythm is seeking an Engineering Lab Manager to join our Product Development team. The Product Development team is made up of a close-knit group of talented engineers across a wide range of engineering disciplines, working together to develop wearable medical sensors and the custom equipment used to fabricate and test them. This role is primarily in-person, and operates on a hybrid model, with an average of four days per week requiring regular on-site presence in our San Francisco, California office, with limited flexibility for remote work when appropriate.

Our lab enables R&D, engineering verification testing, and device builds in a regulated environment where Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), strong documentation, and audit readiness are essential. In this role, you will be accountable for ensuring the lab's infrastructure, equipment readiness, safety culture, and operating procedures enable the team to generate test results that meet strict regulatory expectations.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Product Development engineering lab on-site in San Francisco
  • Author, review, and maintain lab procedures (SOPs/DOPs), and drive adoption through training, signage, and routine enforcement
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Product Development, Quality, and EH&S for lab-related compliance topics, audits/assessments, and issue resolution
  • Own lab safety and housekeeping expectations, including PPE enforcement, hazard controls, and consistent 5S implementation across lab and test areas
  • Conduct and document routine EHS inspections, support Quality lab assessments, and track follow-ups to closure
  • Own the equipment calibration program: maintain schedules, coordinate with calibration vendors, and ensure calibration records are complete, traceable, and available for Quality review/approval
  • Oversee and conduct preventive maintenance (PM) activities per equipment requirements
  • Control nonconforming equipment per applicable procedures
  • Maintain lab storage areas and manage consumables (ordering, stocking, organization) and waste disposal (including hazardous waste as applicable)
  • Lead lab capacity/capability expansion projects (planning, budgeting, scheduling, documentation) to support evolving R&D and testing needs
  • Support build-out and maintenance of dedicated spaces for human factors and/or clinical study activities, including coordination with Facilities and contractors as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • STEM degree (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or similar) and 5+ years of relevant experience, including lab management or lab operations ownership
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and operating effectively in a regulated or quality-centric environment
  • Experience owning or significantly supporting an equipment calibration and preventive maintenance program
  • Experience writing, reviewing, implementing, and enforcing SOPs / lab procedures
  • Strong understanding of lab safety principles and ability to enforce safety requirements in day-to-day operations (including PPE expectations, housekeeping, and hazard controls)
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with engineers, Quality, EHS, and external vendors/contractors, communicating clearly with all levels of the organization
  • Detail-oriented and able to juggle competing priorities, with strong organizational skills
  • Comfortable being hands-on in a lab environment (supporting fixture builds, equipment troubleshooting, and test setup support as needed)
  • Proficiency with common office software (e.g., Word, Excel) and comfort working within controlled documentation systems
  • Values and prioritizes a supportive team environment that enables open-minded and respectful discussion

Location:
