About the Opportunity

Northeastern University's Roux Institute (Portland, ME campus) seeks a Laboratory Manager for the BioPILOT Laboratory - a translational life science research and training laboratory operated by the Roux Institute and located in the Science Building on the University of Southern Maine (USM) Portland Campus. The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for managing operations in the BioPILOT Laboratory in support of the laboratory's instructional and research activities.

  • Report to the Director, Life Science and BioPILOT Programs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Northeastern University's Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS) and the Manager of Laboratory Operations and Special Projects in the USM College of Science, Technology and Health.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for equipment training and laboratory operations for embedded partners and neighboring BioPILOT industry tenants.
  • Work collaboratively with USM faculty, staff and students to coordinate access, training, and compliance when utilizing USM shared equipment and facilities (e.g., autoclave, liquid nitrogen storage).
  • Work with the Director to place and receive orders for the labs, maintain and oversee equipment inventory, calibration, preventative maintenance and repair.
  • Work with the Director to manage invoicing, budget planning and equipment purchasing priorities.
  • Conduct on-site safety training, communicate and enforce laboratory safety rules to internal and external researchers working in the laboratory.
  • Oversee and enforce laboratory safety procedures, including hazardous chemical and biological waste management, maintaining PPE, and assisting with spill cleanup.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the daily operations including scheduling, training and evaluating hourly student assistants, scheduling and monitoring equipment use, and maintaining training records.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of laboratory spaces and equipment.
  • Ensure supplies are stocked and available when needed and maintain supply inventory.
  • Train incoming staff, faculty, and research students in basic experimental techniques.
  • Train staff, faculty, research students, and partners on use of core equipment.
  • Assist with preparation of materials for lab courses.
  • Provide technical assistance and supervision to graduate research assistants working on translational research projects with industry partners.
  • Develop, manage and provide instructional support to students in the lab.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for all lab-related issues, including mediation and resolution of problems as needed.
  • Other tasks as directed by the Director.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a closely related field required. Master's degree preferred. Working knowledge of biological, biochemical and health science related equipment and laboratory procedures is essential. Minimum of 2-3 years laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting required. Supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of OSHA, EPA and DOT Safety Regulations and biohazardous materials handling procedures is necessary.
