Job Title: TEST LAB TECHNICIAN
Employment Status: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Department: Quality
Position Reports To: Quality Manager
Summary Description:
Prepare and perform laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics of aluminum, for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development. Provide guidance and workflow direction to other test lab associates.
Essential Functions:
  • Set-up, adjust and operate laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, spectrometer, balance scales, polishing machine, tensile machine and other equipment to perform accurate testing of materials and evaluation of results as required by the Company's quality policy manual and customer requirements
  • Inspection of incoming Ingot and Weld Rod material for acceptance
  • Test New and Reclaim Sand materials for Loss of Ignition, GFN
  • Destructive Testing to include Machine of test bars to record tensile, yield and elongation
  • Record test results on standardized forms and report test procedures used; prepare graphs and charts; maintain a log of all heat numbers; prepare paperwork for shipping and filing
  • Perform Hardness testing
  • Work with outside labs to complete additional testing, such as Elevated Temps or Round Robbin
  • Product Certifications including Heat Treat CoC, Chemical Analysis and others
  • Perform necessary verification/PM of laboratory equipment and maintain and clean equipment
  • Perform any and all other job related tasks as assigned

Skills or Experience Required:
High school degree or GED is required; associate's degree or equivalent certification from a two (2)-year college or technical school is preferred. Must have SPC charting experience. General knowledge of foundry operation and metal alloys is preferred, and a background in chemistry and/or metallurgy is helpful.
Other Position Demands or Requirements:
Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
Works in climate controlled test laboratory for most hours. Occasionally exposed to plant heat, dust, fumes and noise. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
