OverviewClinical Laboratory Supervisors oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of a clinical laboratory, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of diagnostic testing processes. They lead and support a team of laboratory technologists, technicians, lab assistant/aides, transporters and, oversee workflow, and ensure adherence to quality assurance and regulatory standards set by organizations such as CLIA, NYSCLEP, CAP, OSHA and FD.

Responsibilities

Performs other related duties and jobs designated by the laboratory manager and the Medical Director.
  • Supervises the work and daily operations of the laboratory to ensure that the lab processes adhere to quality standards, meets assured turnaround time, and staff follow safety precautions and strictly adhere to approved SOPs.
  • Periodically evaluates and updates laboratory procedures and methodologies in consultation with lab operations manager and lab director.
  • Follow Quality Control measures specified in test procedures; review and document results; implement corrective action(s) when tolerance limits are exceeded; ensure specimen integrity from point of receipt through filing/archival.
  • Ensure compliance with standards and regulations of accrediting and government agencies.
  • Resolves day-to-day operational problems related to laboratory information systems, personnel, and equipment performance.
  • Prepares work schedules, assigns and prioritizes work to staff, ensures adequate coverage at all times, prioritizes work when equipment fails, and short staffing occurs.
  • Perform duties of subordinate employees during equipment failure and/or shortage of staffing and/or on an as-needed basis.
  • Provides employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems and in resolving escalated complaints or disputes.
  • Teaches new employees, trainees, medical students, residents, and fellows on various laboratory techniques.
  • Advises and orients of staff on policies and procedures as well as quality control measures for test procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with standards and regulations of accrediting and government agencies.
  • Apprises management of problems beyond the scope of own knowledge and expertise.
  • Organizes and provides direction to in-service meetings and continuing education seminars.
  • Ensures all laboratory personnel maintain NYS license and files the confirmation of licensure in employees’ files.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Prepares and evaluates regular and standing orders for supplies, as needed.
  •  Provides recommendations regarding capital equipment acquisition and renovation/construction to best utilize space. 

Requirements

  • NYSED license required/ASCP Certification in Laboratory Science preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Biology or Chemistry required.
  • Master's Degree Preferred.
  • Minimum of six years’ recent experience as a Medical Technologist.
  • Prior experience in a leadership role.
  • Lab Science understanding of Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Blood Banking and Urinalysis.
