Position Summary

Under supervision by department leadership, performs CLIA regulated and clinical contract research testing. Interacts with customers, providing a high level of customer service to resolve customer concerns about sample acceptability and results. Supports preparation of laboratory reagents and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Supports the training of junior and peer staff members. Performs higher level interpretation of testing results and test panels.

Responsibilities
  • Understand and perform to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Perform testing, as scheduled.
  • Support sample evaluation and processing, as needed.
  • Perform on call, weekend, and holiday work, as scheduled.
  • Perform reagent preparation, as scheduled.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance and calibration on equipment.
  • Support customer inquiries via phone, email, and lab information system (LIS).
  • Support the maintenance of reagent and supply inventory.
  • Maintain sample integrity and ensure proper identification of all specimens.
  • Maintain organization of departmental records, as needed.
  • Perform higher level review and release of results, as needed.
  • Perform interpretation of test panel results, as needed.
  • Train staff on job specific tasks.
  • May perform competency assessment of staff, as appropriate.
  • May participate in validations.
  • May assist in educating fellows, residents, students, and visitors to the laboratory.
  • Prepare and manage proficiency samples in the laboratory.
  • May provide support for transfusion product selection, as applicable.
  • Review daily work for accuracy. Recognize and investigate the reason for potential discrepancies and unexpected results, resolving or escalating as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
  • Understands and performs in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, molecular biology, immunology, clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or related field. required
  • Associate's Degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. required

Experience

  • 1-3 years pertinent laboratory experience and/or training required
  • Mastery of Associate Technologist duties, responsibilities, and behaviors. required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as Standard Operating Procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and other department manuals.
  • Must have basic mathematical aptitude.
  • Ability to apply judgment to written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to organize work to provide efficient and productive workflow.
  • Flexibility to work independently and with a team.
  • Must have strong attention to detail.
  • Must have good communication skills, including the ability to provide constructive criticism to fellow employees.
