Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented, proactive, and organized individual to assist Managers of the Test Lab and Prototype Shop with coordination of daily operations and activities. This role is integral to the engineering team's success, supporting product development, testing, and prototyping activities while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality execution. The ideal candidate will bring strong coordination, communication, and organizational skills, enabling smooth operations across design, testing, and supplier engagement activities.

Packaging Test Lab & Shop Coordination:
  • Coordinate daily operations of the Packaging Test Lab and Prototype Shop to ensure optimal workflow.
  • Ensure optimal utilization of equipment and workspace across both the Packaging Lab design lab and prototype shop.
  • Oversee facility maintenance and safety protocols, ensuring both environments meet company and regulatory standards.
  • Manage equipment calibration schedules and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the workspace for ongoing and incoming projects.
  • Collaborate closely with internal cross functional team and external customers to understand project requirements, objectives, and deliverables and implement into the lab schedule.
  • Assist the Lab Manager with quoting test projects, tracking progress, and closing out projects in coordination with Accounts Receivable.

Materials & Inventory Coordination:
  • Plan, procure, and manage materials for packaging lab testing, shop operations and prototype builds.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and implement proactive reorder procedures.
  • Coordinate with external partners, suppliers, and vendors to source materials, components, and services necessary for product/ packaging development, and ensure timely delivery of packaging materials, tools and components.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential roadblocks, and take proactive measures to keep projects on track.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of materials, tools, and components.
  • Track project material usage and proactively identify bottlenecks or shortages that may affect timelines.

Stakeholder Coordination and communication:
  • Serve as primary liaison between laboratory/shop operations and internal teams.
  • Communicate project timelines, resource availability, material inventory roadblocks to stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
  • Support project teams by ensuring resources are available when needed.
  • Support the execution of design validation, testing, and pilot production runs through effective coordination.

Documentation & Reporting:
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date documentation, detailed records of activities, schedules, and resource utilization for all lab and prototype shop activities.
  • Track project progress, test results, and resource utilization through standardized reporting tools.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing operational data and recommending efficiency enhancements.

Education/Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Management, Packaging Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
  • Experience in packaging test lab operations, prototype shop coordination, manufacturing support, or engineering administration is preferred.
  • Familiarity with packaging materials, Distribution testing standards (ISTA, ASTM), and woodworking or fabrication tools is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of equipment calibration, maintenance procedures, and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of procurement processes and supplier management is preferred.
  • Experience working in a project-based environment supporting engineering or R&D teams.
  • Excellent project management skills, including project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective stakeholder coordination.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and proactive planning abilities.
