Job description

Position Title: Specimen Processor

Location: Tacoma, WA - St Joseph Hospital

Hours: 5:00 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a detail oriented and reliable specimen processor. The specimen processor at United WestLabs is responsible for the accurate receipt, identification, preparation, and distribution of clinical specimens in support of laboratory testing. This role ensures specimens are handled in compliance with laboratory protocols, regulatory requirements, and turnaround time standards, while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and quality. The specimen processor works collaboratively with laboratory and support staff to support efficient workflow and reliable patient test results.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Quickly and accurately, process specimen requisitions, carefully ensuring that all relevant information is accurate and all tests requested are ordered.
  • Correctly, match test requested with appropriate specimen and label according to established procedures.
  • Process STAT specimens in a timely manner
  • Assist all callers by providing accurate information in a timely and positive manner
  • Problem solve issues to resolve and ensure accuracy
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment for all members of the health care team including the collecting and disposing of specimens and other contaminated material according to established procedure with the adherence to the standards of infection control and body fluid precautions and protective equipment when necessary.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the billing process, including separating clean and dirty requisitions or cleaning dirty requisitions, if called upon.
  • Perform the duties of a courier if called upon.
  • Deliver supplies when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by the operations and processing management team

Required Skills:

  • Clinical laboratory experience - 1 year
  • Experience using Epic LIMS (Beaker) - 1 year

Physical Requirements:

  • Continuous sitting (up to 8 hrs/day)
  • Continuous walking/standing (up to 8 hrs/day)
  • Simple grasping with both hands
  • Fine manipulation with both hands, repetitive movement
  • Frequent lifting of 10 lb. or less
