ABOUT US

The West Michigan Construction Institute (WMCI) is on a mission to develop the next generation of commercial construction professionals. ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a High School Carpentry Instructor at WMCI, you'll be at the forefront of shaping future construction professionals. This full-time, hands-on role blends technical instruction with program leadership. You'll serve as the primary instructor for our high school general carpentry program, developing and delivering a rigorous curriculum that aligns with National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) standards as well as State of Michigan and Career and Technical Education (CTE) requirements. This position will report to work on August 10, 2026.

In this role, you will:

  • Instruct and Inspire: Develop and deliver engaging NCCER-aligned curriculum that combines theory with practical, hands-on carpentry training for 11th and 12th grade students.
  • Create Dynamic Learning Environments: Cultivate a safe, inclusive classroom and lab environment where every student is encouraged to explore, experiment, and excel.
  • Forge Industry Partnerships: Collaborate with fellow WMCI instructors and construction industry professionals to secure field trips, guest speakers, internships, apprenticeships, and other real-world learning opportunities.
  • Lead with Precision: Oversee the procurement of lab materials and equipment in alignment with program budgets, and maintain meticulous records of student progress, attendance, and program statistics.
  • Ensure Excellence: Facilitate NCCER module exams and hands-on performance tests while upholding rigorous safety and CTE standards, and participate in advisory council and board meetings to help shape program direction.

ABOUT YOU

You're a seasoned trades expert with a passion for mentoring the next generation. With at least six years of field leadership as a residential or commercial carpenter and a minimum of three years of vocational/technical teaching or training experience, you know how to bridge real-world expertise with effective instruction. You thrive in dynamic, safety-focused environments and are excited to share your knowledge with high school students eager to embark on impactful careers in the skilled trades.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Technical Expertise: Journey-level carpenter with a minimum of six years of industry experience.
  • Instructional Experience: At least three years of teaching, training, or crew leadership in a vocational/technical construction or maintenance setting.
  • Educational Background: High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Safety & Compliance: Strong knowledge of safety procedures and regulations; OSHA 10 certification is preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and relevant instructional technologies.
  • Additional Requirements: Reliable transportation, valid insurance, and a current driver's license.
