Job description

Automotive Service Technician Apprentice
About the Program
Stivers Ford has partnered with Trenholm State Community College to create a hands-on apprenticeship for students pursuing a career as a professional automotive service technician. This program combines classroom instruction and lab work at Trenholm State with paid, real-world experience in a working Ford dealership service department.
Apprentices earn a wage while they learn, gain direct mentorship from Stivers Ford's ASE-certified master technicians, and work toward Ford-specific factory training and certifications - building a clear, structured path toward a career as a full-time, certified Ford technician.
What You'll Do
  • Assist certified technicians with routine maintenance and repair work, including oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, and multi-point inspections
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and computer-controlled vehicle systems under the supervision of experienced technicians
  • Rotate through key service areas (quick lube, brakes, electrical, engine performance, and general repair) to build well-rounded skills
  • Use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and Ford-specific software and technical resources
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with dealership and OSHA safety standards
  • Accurately document work performed, parts used, and diagnostic findings
  • Apply coursework and skills learned at Trenholm State directly on the shop floor
  • Progress through structured skill checkpoints and performance evaluations as you advance through the program
  • Provide attentive, professional service that reflects positively on the Stivers Ford and Trenholm State partnership
Program Structure
  • Classroom & Lab Training: Enrolled in Trenholm State's Automotive Service Technology program
  • On-the-Job Training: Scheduled shifts at Stivers Ford, coordinated around class schedule
  • Mentorship: Paired with a dedicated journeyman/master technician mentor throughout the apprenticeship
  • Ford-Specific Training: Access to Ford's factory training curriculum and manufacturer certification pathways as you progress
  • Tool & Equipment Support: Guidance on building a professional tool set, with program resources to help offset startup costs
  • Career Path: Successful apprentices are considered for full-time technician positions at Stivers Ford upon program completion and certification
Qualifications
Required:
  • Currently enrolled (or enrolling) in Trenholm State Community College's Automotive Service Technology program, or willing to enroll as a condition of the apprenticeship
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in the automotive industry
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to a consistent work/school schedule
  • Willingness to learn, take direction, and work as part of a team
  • Basic proficiency with hand tools (preferred, not required)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks including standing, bending, and working in various shop conditions
Preferred:
  • Prior coursework or experience in automotive repair, small engines, or a related mechanical field
  • Basic computer skills for use with diagnostic software and service documentation systems
What We Offer
  • Competitive hourly apprentice wage with scheduled increases tied to skill milestones
  • Flexible scheduling built around Trenholm State class hours
  • Direct mentorship from experienced, certified Ford technicians
  • Access to Ford factory training and manufacturer certifications
  • A clear path to full-time employment as a certified technician
  • Employee discounts on parts, service, and vehicle purchases
  • Exposure to the latest Ford diagnostic tools, technology, and vehicle systems (including hybrid/EV platforms)

How to Apply
Students currently enrolled at Trenholm State Community College's Automotive Service Technology program, or prospective students interested in this partnership, can apply by:
  1. Submitting an application through Stivers Ford (in person at the dealership or via the careers page), and/or
  2. Speaking with a Trenholm State Automotive Service Technology program advisor about apprenticeship placement
