What is a knowledge base manager?

Knowledge Base Managers are professionals responsible for organizing, curating, and maintaining a company's knowledge base or information repository. They ensure that accurate and up-to-date information is easily accessible to employees, customers, or end-users. Their duties often include content creation, editing, user training, and implementing best practices for knowledge management. By maintaining a comprehensive knowledge base, they help improve efficiency, support, and overall customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by a knowledge base manager, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge Knowledge Base Managers face is keeping content accurate and up-to-date as products or services evolve. This requires close collaboration with subject matter experts and regular audits of existing articles. Additionally, balancing user accessibility with technical depth can be tricky, so soliciting feedback from both end-users and internal teams is essential. Leveraging analytics to identify gaps or outdated content helps prioritize updates, ensuring the knowledge base remains a reliable resource.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a knowledge base manager?

To thrive as a Knowledge Base Manager, you need expertise in content management, technical writing, and information architecture, often supported by a bachelor's degree in communications, information science, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), knowledge management platforms like Zendesk or Confluence, and analytics tools is typically required. Strong collaboration, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for maintaining accurate, accessible, and user-friendly knowledge resources that empower both customers and internal teams.

Job description

Last Energy seeks a Helpdesk Technician to support the day-to-day IT needs of a fast-growing, DOE-regulated nuclear startup. This role will handle user support, new hire onboarding, and device provisioning while working directly alongside a lean IT team supporting a compliance-driven environment.
This role extends beyond traditional helpdesk boundaries. As a lean team supporting a rapidly scaling company, you will be pulled into tasks traditionally earmarked for Systems Administrators or Security Analysts. The ideal candidate is hungry, self-driven, and thrives on autonomy, taking ownership of a task, researching what it actually takes to get it done right, and delivering results.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serve as first point of contact for day-to-day IT support tickets, troubleshooting independently before escalating, supporting our users
  • Own new hire onboarding and device lifecycle: account provisioning, laptop imaging, and iPhone enrollment via Apple Business Manager and Google MDM, and asset inventory tracking
  • Administer user accounts, access, and endpoint compliance across Google Workspace and the managed device fleet
  • Document recurring issues and solutions, building out internal standards and a knowledge base as common problems are identified
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • 1-2+ years of hands-on IT support/helpdesk experience, with strong first-principles troubleshooting instincts
  • Demonstrated ability to self-teach and research independently, using AI tools as an aid rather than a crutch
  • Working knowledge of Windows and macOS environments, along with foundational networking concepts (DNS, DHCP, VPN, basic connectivity troubleshooting)
  • Experience with Google Workspace administration and mobile device management (Apple/Google MDM) preferred
  • Enthusiastic about being on-site 5 days a week
