How does a kitchen cabinet designer typically collaborate with clients and contractors during a project?

Kitchen cabinet designers often work closely with clients to understand their preferences, functional needs, and budget constraints. They collaborate with contractors and installers by creating detailed plans, selecting suitable materials, and ensuring that designs are feasible for the given space. Effective communication is key, as designers regularly coordinate with other professionals, such as architects and interior designers, to make sure that the cabinetry integrates seamlessly with the overall kitchen layout. This collaborative approach helps address potential challenges early and ensures a smooth installation process.

What is kitchen cabinet design?

Kitchen cabinet design is the process of planning, creating, and arranging cabinetry to optimize storage, functionality, and aesthetics in a kitchen. Designers take into account the kitchen's layout, style preferences, budget, and specific storage needs when selecting materials, finishes, and hardware. A well-designed kitchen cabinet layout maximizes available space, improves workflow, and enhances the overall look and feel of the kitchen.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Kitchen Cabinet Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kitchen Cabinet Designer, you need a solid understanding of interior design principles, cabinetry construction, and spatial planning, often supported by a degree or certification in interior design or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software, 3D modeling programs, and design visualization tools is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and attention to detail help designers interpret client needs and create customized solutions. These skills ensure functional, aesthetically pleasing designs that meet client expectations and optimize kitchen spaces.

Cabinet Designer & Selections Coordinator – Drive Residential Remodeling Excellence

Job Overview

  • Company: Encompass Design & Remodeling
  • Location: Jenison, MI
  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Compensation: $60,000 - $110,000+ (base salary plus monthly commission) opportunities; strong six-figure earning potential based on performance
  • Project Scope: High-end residential design/build remodeling, kitchens, cabinetry, selections, and client experience
  • Required License: Valid driver’s license for local travel

The Opportunity

Encompass Design & Remodeling is hiring a Selections Coordinator / Cabinet Designer to guide high-end residential remodeling clients through cabinetry, product selections, finishes, and project-ready decisions.

This is not an entry-level design role. We need someone who already understands cabinetry, kitchens, remodeling products, construction sequencing, and client-facing decision-making. You will help homeowners make confident selections, design cabinet layouts, coordinate with vendors and showrooms, and keep projects moving so materials can be ordered and schedules can be built accurately.

This role is ideal for a polished, organized, technically strong professional who enjoys design, high-end clients, construction details, and helping a fast-growing company build scalable systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Design cabinet layouts and kitchen packages using 2020 Design software.
  • Guide clients through selections for cabinetry, hardware, countertops, tile, flooring, plumbing fixtures, paint, trim, appliances, and related finish materials.
  • Help clients understand product differences, lead times, quality levels, and practical construction impacts.
  • Coach clients toward timely decisions so products can be ordered and projects can be scheduled.
  • Recommend cabinet lines, custom/semi-custom solutions, product substitutions, and alternate selections when lead times or availability create issues.
  • Work from pre-sales layouts and designs created by the design/sales team, then build out cabinet packages and selections in detail.
  • Coordinate with sales, design, project management, vendors, showrooms, and supply partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendor/showroom contacts.
  • Document selections clearly in Buildertrend or the company’s project management system.
  • Support the project manager when selection questions, product issues, backorders, or substitutions arise after handoff.
  • Conduct jobsite visits and field measurements as needed, especially for cabinetry.
  • Represent Encompass with professionalism, polish, and confidence in front of high-end residential clients.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven cabinet design experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of residential remodeling, kitchen design, cabinetry, and finish selections.
  • Proficiency with 2020 Design software.
  • Ability to read layouts, understand cabinet design details, and translate client needs into buildable selections.
  • Strong understanding of product categories such as cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, plumbing fixtures, cabinet hardware, trim, paint, and appliances.
  • Ability to explain tradeoffs to clients clearly and professionally.
  • Strong organization, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Comfortable managing multiple active projects at once.
  • Strong communication skills with clients, vendors, sales, and production teams.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally for site visits, showrooms, and client meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in cabinet design, kitchen design, residential selections, showroom design, interior design, or residential remodeling.
  • Experience with Buildertrend.
  • Experience with Chief Architect.
  • Familiarity with high-end product lines, custom cabinetry, semi-custom cabinetry, luxury appliances, plumbing fixtures, countertops, and tile.
  • Experience working with high-end residential clients.
  • Experience coordinating with sales teams, project managers, vendors, and installers.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary plus monthly commission opportunities.
  • Strong earning potential for an organized, driven performer.
  • Paid time off, holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
  • Phone provided or phone reimbursement.
  • Company technology provided; Windows-based equipment may be used for design software.
  • Mileage reimbursement for work-related travel.
  • Potential company vehicle support based on business need and travel volume.
  • Growth opportunity as Encompass expands into additional roles, locations, and leadership needs.

Who Thrives Here

You’ll be a strong fit if you are:

  • Polished and professional with clients.
  • Positive, upbeat, and solutions-oriented.
  • Highly organized and deadline-driven.
  • Comfortable pushing clients toward decisions without being pushy.
  • Technically strong but also relationship-focused.
  • Motivated by growth, performance, and building something long-term.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, high-volume remodeling environment.
