Job description

Controller, Kansas City Portfolio
Full-Time | Overland Park, KS | Salary, Exempt
Occidental Management, Inc. is a Wichita-based commercial real estate and property management firm and we’re hiring a Controller to own the accounting and financial reporting function for our growing KC portfolio. This is a full-time, on-site role based out of our Aspiria campus management office in Overland Park, working closely with the CFO and Corporate Controller to keep the numbers behind a fast-growing portfolio accurate, timely, and audit ready.
If you’ve owned the full accounting cycle for a multi-entity real estate or construction business, this is a rare chance to help shape – and eventually grow the accounting function for an entire market while staying connected to the resources of an established company.
What You Will Do
  • Owning the monthly close for the KC portfolio — consolidated financials, operating reports, cash flow projections, budgets, and P amp;L analysis that give leadership real visibility into performance.
  • Partnering with the CFO and Corporate Controller to execute the internal control framework across all KC real estate LLCs, flagging risks early and bringing forward solutions.
  • Leading annual budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with property managers and leasing agents, then tracking performance against it all year.
  • Running job cost accounting for active capital and construction projects — ledgers, pay applications, lender draw packages, change orders, and the audit trail (retainage, lien waivers, subcontractor compliance) that comes with them.
  • Managing project-level cash flow to keep draws funded, liquidity protected, and margins on target.
  • Operating as a true member of the broader accounting team, and laying the groundwork — processes, documentation, eventually a small team — for the KC portfolio’s continued growth.
What You Will Bring
  • 8+ years of progressive, in-house accounting experience, with a track record owning the full close, reporting, and control environment for a privately held company.
  • 3+ years directly managing a small accounting team — hiring, coaching, performance reviews, and accountability for the team’s work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Working knowledge of project/job cost accounting — percentage-of-completion methods, AIA-style billing (G702/G703), and lender draw requirements.
  • Experience with multi-tenant commercial property, hotel, or shopping center accounting is a strong plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record for occasional travel to corporate offices in Wichita.
