THE POSITION

Start your mechanical career with the Department of Transportation, Sullivan County Maintenance Organization as a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee. This position will give you the opportunity to train with experienced staff while working on important equipment. You will learn how to maintain and repair vehicles that support essential transportation operations. Take the first step toward a rewarding future in a supportive and skilled work environment.



DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on learning how to maintain and repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment under the guidance of experienced staff. You will support safe transportation services while helping you build strong technical skills. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Repair Assistance: Assist with repairs and overhauls of cars, trucks, and construction equipment
  • Maintenance Training: Learn and participate in preventative maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment
  • Diagnostic Support: Help identify equipment problems using diagnostic tools and established procedures
  • Inspection Participation: Take part in safety and emissions inspection activities and related documentation when applicable
  • Safety Practices: Learn proper safety procedures, hazard recognition, and accident prevention methods
  • Field Adjustments: Assist with routine adjustments and minor repairs to support safe equipment operation

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM, or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. (Shift will be determined by seniority)
  • May require travel, overtime, and dual shifts. Work hours may vary during winter season.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,844 (before taxes).
