Position Summary: The Athletic Head Coach - Varsity Lacrosse is responsible for developing, managing and promoting strategies to support the holistic well-being of Magnificat High School student athletes competing in their assigned sport. The Head Coach provides oversight, direction and coaching to the sports program.ย 

Mission:

Acts in a manner consistent with the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church, the Mission and Heritage of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, and the Mission, Values, and beliefs of Magnificat High School.

Works to build a respectful, inclusive, and equitable, community with students, colleagues, parents, and others where all students feel respected, valued, and can thrive.

Respects the racial, ethnic, religious, and socio-economic diversity of all students, faculty and staff.

Utilizes a student-centered approach in collaboration with all community members to develop and support programming in alignment with the school's Mission, Values, and goals.

Employs a restorative approach in developing and maintaining relationships with students, families, and staff.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Upholds and integrates the Mission and philosophy of Magnificat High School within the athletic program, collaborating closely with the Director of Athletics, assistant coaches, student-athletes and their families:
  • Serves as a professional ambassador for both their sprot and Magnificat High School, consistently demonstrating character aligned with the values of the school and the Athletic Department.ย 
  • Leads by example, showing respect through personal appearance, demeanor, behavior, language and genuine engagement.ย 
  • Coaches with the goal of helping each student-athlete realize and develop their fullest potential.ย 
  • Maintains clear, timely and respectful communication with administrators, students, parents, school staff, athletic trainers, game officials and college coaches.ย 
  • Represents Magnificat High School by wearing official school attire at all competitions, including games, meets and matches.ย 
  • Collaborates with the Director of Athletics and Dean of Student Life and Formation to establish team policies that align with the school's Mission and philosophy. Actively upholds and supports these policies both in practice and principle, while clearly communicating a program philosophy that reflects the core values and Mission of Magnificat High School.ย 
  • Understands and upholds the philosophy and policies of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA):
  • Serves as the school's official representative at all OHSAA rules interpretation sessions and tournament draw meetings.ย 
  • Ensures the safety of the student athlete through carful planning of conditioning, practices, usage of equipment and ensuring the correct fit as well as monitoring game conditions. The Head Coach follows all policies and procedures related to building and grounds safety.
  • Maintains supervision until all team members have left the school or practice/game facility.
  • Team selection and program development:
  • Identifies and selects student athletes for team participation; conducts tryouts across all levels, collaborating with the Director of Athletics to finalize team selections.
  • Submits a complete and current eligibility roster, including all necessary player information to the Athletic Department.
  • Develops a comprehensive program that includes practice schedules, training guidelines and system of play that are unique to the sport.
  • Informs student athletes and their families about required athletic fees, encourages timely payments and enforces polices related to non-payment.
  • Oversees and coordinates activities involving students and staff during both the active season and in the off-season, ensuring continuous development and engagement.
  • Develops consistent coaching techniques and strategies to be used throughout the entire program:
  • Handles long term planning as well as day to day management of the sports program
  • Attends all varsity practices, games and meetings and oversees junior varsity (JV) and freshmen activities as needed.
  • Coordinates assistant coaches, junior varsity and freshmen programs as extensions of the varsity program.
  • Develops a well organized practice plan which utilizes staff to their maximum potential.
  • Permits only students enrolled in Magnificat High School to condition or practice with school sponsored teams.
  • Communicates effectively with the Athletic Department, assistant coaches, student athletes and families:
  • Holds weekly or bi-weekly meetings with coaching staff to discuss potential problems or concerns with the program.
  • Meets with the assistant coach and individual team members throughout the season to discuss their progress.
  • Meets with team members and families to discuss concerns as needed; responds appropriately and within one working day to all communications from students, families, parents, administration and colleagues.
  • Communicates effectively with the Athletic Trainer:
  • Reports injuries to proper school officials; notifies the Director of Athletics of injuries needing medical attention; assures the injured athlete receives competent medical care.
  • Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, secures the signed approval of the student's doctor or athletic trainer before permitting the athlete to return to any athletic activities.ย 
  • Facilitates off season workouts and conditioning in accordance with OHSAA guidelines.
  • Attends all parent meetings and sports banquets, leading the teams on all occasions.
  • Provides proper supervision and administration of all centers of activity, auditorium, locker room, equipment room, busses, and visiting locker rooms.
  • Is responsible for the conduct and sportsmanship of student athletes during practices, at competitions, travel to and from contests and in public when representing Magnificat High School.
  • Rides with the team to and from all athletic functions, unless other arrangements have been made in advance with the Director of Athletics.
  • Score reporting and media responsibilities:
  • Promptly submit detailed game reports to the Athletic Department following each competition.
  • Manage and regularly update team social media platforms to share highlights, announcements and ensuring that all content posted aligns with school policies and promotes a positive self image.
  • Identify and nominate outstanding athletes for local, regional and state level honors and awards.
  • Engage with media outlets in a professional and respectful manner, representing the team and school positively in all communications.ย 
  • In conjunction with the Athletic Department:
  • Assumes responsibility for the care of equipment, supplies and materials used for the team.
  • Collects and returns all equipment and uniforms withing one week of the conclusion of the season.
  • Prepares and submits an equipment and uniform inventory
  • Turns in to the Director of Athletics any equipment that is deemed unsafe or has reached its useful life.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director of Athletics for the purchase of new equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Submits an End of Season Report
  • Keeps accurate records of all interscholastic contests, information and statistics and submits them to the Director of Athletics for filing and reference purposes.
  • Recommends opponents for independent games and contests.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director of Athletics regarding employment of assistant coaches.
  • Attends and participates fully in Magnificat High School's Open House(s) for prospective students and their parents.
  • Communicates with college coaches as needed:
  • Assists the Director of Athletics and guidance counselors in ensuring that college recruiting is done withing the guidelines of NCAA and NAIA standards.ย 
  • Oversees and organizes Magnificat High School's summer camp program for the sport (for additional compensation as available).

Other Responsibilities

  • Models lifelong learning by participating in professional growth activities and demonstrates use of current best practices in student engagement strategies.
  • Develops cultural competency through increased awareness of one's own identity, culture and biases.ย 
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily based on campus grounds, including indoor gymnasiums, athletic fields, and weight training facilities.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions during practices and games.ย 
  • Fast paced and physically active setting with extended periods of standing, sitting, walking and demonstrating athletic movements. Frequent balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling or reaching.
  • Ability to perform difficult tasks that require dexterity, physical strength and stamina.
  • Frequent evening and weekend hours required for practices, games and travel.
  • Must be able to manage high energy situations and maintain composure in competitive and emotionally charged situations.


Requirements

Position Qualifications:

Education:ย 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience in coaching and or demonstrated leadership role in the assigned sport preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in coaching at the high school level preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Thorough and demonstrated knowledge of assigned sport required.
