What does a junior transportation engineer do?

A Junior Transportation Engineer assists in the planning, design, and implementation of transportation systems such as roads, highways, and public transit projects. They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers, helping with data analysis, preparing reports, creating design drawings, and ensuring projects comply with safety and environmental regulations. Their role often includes conducting field investigations, using computer-aided design (CAD) software, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. This entry-level position is a great starting point for building experience in the transportation engineering field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a junior transportation engineer expect in their first year on the job?

As a Junior Transportation Engineer, you will typically assist with traffic studies, roadway design, and data collection for transportation projects. Early responsibilities often include preparing technical reports, drafting engineering plans using CAD software, and supporting senior engineers in project coordination. You'll likely collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including planners and construction professionals, and may also attend site visits to observe field conditions. This hands-on experience helps you build foundational skills, understand regulatory requirements, and prepare for more independent work as you progress in your career.
