Job description

Staff Software Engineer - IE07IE

We're determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

The Claims IT department is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our team and play a pivotal role in designing, building, and scaling next-generation claims technology solutions. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will drive architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and deliver high-impact software that transforms the claims experience for our customers and internal users.

You will work at the intersection of modern cloud-native engineering and emerging Generative AI / Agentic AI capabilities, helping the organization harness these technologies to improve claims processing, decision-making, and operational efficiency.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Columbus, OH; and Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, cloud-native applications and microservices on AWS to support claims processing platforms.
  • Architect and implement Generative AI and Agentic AI solutions, including LLM integration, prompt engineering, AI orchestration pipelines, retrieval- augmented generation (RAG), and autonomous agent workflows.
  • Serve as a hands-on technical leader - writing production code, conducting code reviews, and setting engineering standards for the team.
  • Collaborate with product owners, architects, data scientists, and business stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, and innovation.
  • Drive adoption of DevOps best practices including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (Terraform), automated testing, and observability.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, frameworks, and patterns to improve developer productivity, system reliability, and customer outcomes.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our claims platform architecture, ensuring solutions are secure, performant, and maintainable at enterprise scale.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams across Claims IT to ensure consistency in standards, patterns, and tooling.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of delivering complex, enterprise-scale applications.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Hands-on experience with Generative AI and Agentic AI technologies - including working with large language models (LLMs), AI agents, prompt engineering, vector databases, RAG architectures, and AI orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, or similar).
  • Strong proficiency in Python and/or Java, with demonstrated ability to build production-grade backend services and APIs.
  • Extensive experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including but not limited to: Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SQS/SNS, API Gateway, ALB, Step Functions, and IAM.
  • Experience building modern front-end applications using Angular.
  • Solid understanding of RESTful API design, microservices architecture, and event-driven systems.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tools and practices (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals: design patterns, data structures, algorithms, testing strategies, and secure coding practices.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence technical direction across teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Guidewire ClaimCenter or other Guidewire products is a significant plus.
  • Experience with FastAPI, Flask, or Spring Boot for building backend services.
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (ECS/EKS).
  • Experience with serverless architectures and event-driven design patterns (e.g., AWS Lambda + SQS/SNS + DynamoDB Streams).
  • Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, Splunk, or similar).
  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer, or Machine Learning Specialty).
  • Experience with testing frameworks such as pytest, JUnit, Karate, or similar.
  • Prior experience in the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Familiarity with Agile/SAFe methodologies and working in a scaled Agile environment.
