Junior Software Test Engineers are entry-level professionals responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications. They execute test cases, identify and document bugs, and collaborate with developers to resolve issues. Typically, they work under the guidance of senior testers or quality assurance leads and gradually build their skills in areas such as test automation, bug tracking, and software development life cycles. Their work is essential for delivering reliable and user-friendly software products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software test engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and basic programming or scripting skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools like JIRA, automation frameworks such as Selenium, and knowledge of version control systems like Git are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with developers. These competencies ensure software quality, minimize defects, and contribute to efficient, reliable product releases.

What are some common challenges faced by junior software test engineers when transitioning from manual to automated testing?

Junior Software Test Engineers often find the transition from manual to automated testing challenging due to the need to learn new programming languages and testing frameworks. Make an Impact Where It Matters Most

At Intelliforce, we build and sustain identity systems that mission teams rely on every day. In this role, you will support an Enterprise Identity, Credential, and Access Management system by helping ensure new capabilities work as intended and new releases do not break what already matters. You will be part of a cross-functional team focused on quality, reliability, and confidence across a platform where stability and backward compatibility are critical.

What Makes This Opportunity Stand Out

This role gives you the chance to work at the point where engineering quality meets mission trust. You will help create, execute, and document both manual and automated tests across new and existing ICAM capabilities, working closely with software engineers, system engineers, platform engineers, administrators, and fellow test engineers. The work blends test strategy, automation, defect tracking, regression coverage, and performance analysis, so your impact is visible in every release.

At Intelliforce, your work is visible and your contributions matter. Because we support prime programs, our teams stay close to meaningful mission work with real momentum. Because we are a small business, leadership is accessible, communication is direct, and strong engineering gets noticed. Add in long-term stability, strong benefits, and a people-first culture, and this becomes more than another test role. It is a chance to help protect the quality of systems mission users depend on every day.

Here’s What Your Day-to-Day Could Include

• Collaborate with software engineers to develop effective testing strategies and test cases
• Create automated testing frameworks and test harnesses
• Discover, report, and track testing defects
• Analyze test results and report performance, load, and other issues
• Develop, execute, and maintain acceptance, integration, and functional system tests
• Perform continuous functional and regression testing
• Work across engineering disciplines to help ensure new releases preserve backward compatibility

Minimum Qualifications

• Clearance: Top Secret Clearance with Polygraph, must be active. We do not have the ability to sponsor clearances
• Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen. We cannot sponsor visas
• Technical Bachelors Degree and 5 years of relevant experience, or High School Diploma and 9 years of relevant experience.

Required Skills

• Experience designing, creating, and executing manual and automated testing solutions, including analysis of results to determine adequacy of testing
• Experience testing in Windows and Linux or CentOS environments
• Working knowledge of test tools such as Behave!, SoapUI, Selenium, JUnit, and JRunner
• Experience with or knowledge of web communication protocols such as REST
• Experience with or knowledge of data formats such as JSON and XML
• Experience with or knowledge of scripting languages such as Groovy, Perl, Python, or Ruby
• Experience creating and managing cronjobs
• Experience with or knowledge of Java
• Experience with or knowledge of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
• Experience with or knowledge of Public Key Infrastructure
• Experience with version repositories such as Git, SVN, or CVS
• Experience with or knowledge of SQL
• Ability to work independently and as part of an Agile development team using strong time management to triage issues and prioritize tasks
• Ability to clearly communicate technical issues and ideas, both orally and in writing, across engineering disciplines

Desired Skills

• Experience supporting enterprise ICAM testing efforts
• Familiarity with automated regression strategies for systems requiring backward compatibility
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional engineering environment
• Comfort working with minimal supervision in a fast-moving mission setting
