What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Software Engineer University, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Software Engineer University, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and eagerness to learn help you stand out in collaborative and fast-paced academic environments. These skills are essential for effectively contributing to projects, adapting to new technologies, and building a foundation for future growth in software engineering.

What are Junior Software Engineer University positions?

Junior Software Engineer University positions are entry-level roles designed for recent graduates or students who have just completed their studies in computer science or related fields. These positions typically involve assisting senior engineers with software development tasks, debugging code, and learning about industry best practices. They provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, improve programming skills, and work on real-world projects within a team. Such roles often serve as a stepping stone for advancing to more senior engineering positions.

What is the difference between Junior Software Engineer University vs Junior Software Engineer Entry-Level?

AspectJunior Software Engineer UniversityJunior Software Engineer Entry-Level
Required CredentialsTypically a recent computer science or related degree from a universityOften a degree or equivalent experience, open to self-taught or bootcamp graduates
Work EnvironmentInternships, university projects, or entry-level positions in tech companies or startupsEntry-level roles in various industries, including tech firms, startups, or corporate IT teams
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily used by companies hiring recent graduates or interns from universitiesUsed broadly for new hires with minimal professional experience in software development

The main difference is that Junior Software Engineer University roles are often targeted at recent graduates with academic backgrounds, while Junior Software Engineer Entry-Level positions are open to individuals with minimal professional experience, regardless of educational background. Both roles serve as starting points for a career in software development but differ mainly in candidate background and hiring context.

What are some typical challenges faced by Junior Software Engineers working in a university setting?

Junior Software Engineers in a university environment often work on diverse projects that support academic, administrative, or research needs. A common challenge is adapting to legacy systems or specialized software used in higher education, which may require learning new frameworks or troubleshooting undocumented code. Collaboration with faculty, researchers, and IT staff is frequent, so strong communication skills are essential. Balancing multiple priorities—such as supporting ongoing research while maintaining existing applications—can also be demanding, but offers valuable experience and opportunities for skill development.

KBR is seeking a Junior Software Engineer that we can mentor and grow to support the development, integration, and evaluation of software solutions for various RF systems in various operational and signal environments. This role supports control, modeling, simulation, and testing of operationally relevant systems across research and applied DoD programs.
This position requires a strong software foundation, interest in RF system fundamentals, and the ability to work across system, algorithm, and integration boundaries with guidance from senior engineers. The software person will work closely with systems engineers, and at times under the direction of systems engineers and hardware teams to implement, test, and analyze position, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities in constructive, laboratory and field environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, test, and document software for systems, simulations, and performance analysis environments
  • Implement algorithms and models under guidance, including measurement modeling, error characterization, and estimator behavior under non-ideal conditions
  • Implement and integrate algorithms within software frameworks
  • Integrate software with hardware- and software-in-the-loop (HITL and SITL) and digital twin environments
  • Develop interfaces between software components and external systems
  • Support test planning, execution, and analysis for PNT-focused experiments, demonstrations, and evaluations
  • Collaborate with systems engineers to align system requirements with software designs and implementations
  • Document software implementations, interfaces, and test results to support technical reviews and deliverables

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline
  • 0-2 years of professional experience developing software for technical systems (experience can include internships, co-ops, or academic projects)
  • Programming experience in C#/C++ or Python
  • Experience developing software on Linux and Windows based systems
  • Familiarity with PNT concepts (e.g., Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs), inertial navigation, timing, sensor fusion)
  • Experience integrating software with complex systems, simulations, or external hardware components
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance
  • Participate in team technical interchange meetings to describe technical activities, progress, issues, improvements, and more

Desired Qualifications
  • Academic or project experience with GPS/GNSS signal processing, navigation algorithms, or timing systems
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, or digital twin environments
  • Familiarity with real-time or embedded systems
  • Experience with HITL/SITL test architectures or laboratory integration
  • Experience supporting DoD programs, laboratory R&D, or operational prototyping efforts

Basic Compensation: $80,000 - $100,000 (For Beavercreek, OH Only)
The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
