Junior High Girls Basketball Coach (Grades 7 & 8) at Roanoke-Benson Junior High School.
Job Title: Junior High Girls Basketball Coach
Role Overview: The coach is responsible for instructing and training junior high student-athletes in the fundamentals of basketball while promoting a safe environment that encourages intellectual growth, social development, and citizenship. The coach must serve as an exemplar of the school, fostering self-discipline and excellence in participants.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge: Must be knowledgeable regarding coaching principles and the specific rules of basketball.
  • Safety Certifications: Required to have current First Aid training and be a trained Automated External Defibrillator (AED) user.
  • Compliance Training: Must complete online concussion awareness training in accordance with the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act.
  • Professionalism: Must adhere to high standards of professional and appropriate conduct, maintaining age-appropriate boundaries with students at all times.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Athletic Instruction & Program Management
  • Provide direct instruction in basketball skills, strategy, and physical conditioning.
  • Schedule all practices and activities with prior approval from the principal and athletic director
  • Observe the "Wednesday Night" rule: no school activities should be scheduled past 6:00 p.m. to respect community/church time.

2. Student Conduct & Sportsmanship
  • Develop and annually review a Conduct Code for all participants, emphasizing that hazing and bullying are strictly prohibited.
  • Teach and enforce standards of sportsmanship, including respect for officials, opponents, and the public.
  • Ensure student behavior is above reproach on the court, in the classroom, and while traveling to/from events.

3. Safety, Eligibility & Compliance
  • Medical Records: Verify that every student has a current certificate of physical fitness and proof of medical insurance on file before participation.
  • Academic Eligibility: Monitor student grades weekly. A student is ineligible if they are failing any class from the previous week.
  • Concussion Safety: Immediately remove any athlete from play who exhibits signs of a concussion and follow the district's "return-to-play" and "return-to-learn" protocols.
  • Mandated Reporting: Act as a mandated reporter, immediately notifying the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services of any suspected child abuse or neglect.

4. Administrative Duties
  • Training Rules: Enforce year-round training regulations regarding the use or possession of tobacco, nicotine (including vapes), alcohol, and drugs.
  • Transportation: Supervise athletes on team buses; students are required to ride the bus to and from all athletic events. Cell phones must be put away.
  • Equipment: Account for the care, use, and return of all school-issued athletic equipment.
  • Inappropriate Contact: Inform immediate supervisors if a student initiates inappropriate contact via personal technology or social media.

Salary & Compensation: This position is compensated according to the Coaches Salary Schedule in the Collective Bargaining Agreement under Group 6 (JH Basketball 7 & 8). Salaries are determined based on the base rate and the coach's years of experience
