Job description

Job Title: Junior EstimatorJob Description

The Junior Estimator supports the preparation of accurate and competitive bids for structural, miscellaneous, and ornamental steel projects. This role focuses on detailed material and labor take-offs, assembling complete estimates, coordinating supplier and subcontractor pricing, and maintaining organized bid documentation. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with construction drawings, numbers, and spreadsheets, and who is eager to learn and grow within a structured estimating process.

Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate material and labor take-offs from contract drawings, specifications, and shop details for structural, miscellaneous, and ornamental steel.
  • Quantify weights, lengths, piece counts, and fabrication operations such as cutting, fitting, welding, and coating to build reliable cost estimates.
  • Identify furnish-only versus fabricate-and-erect scope and price each appropriately.
  • Solicit, receive, and log supplier and subcontractor quotes for materials, galvanizing, paint and coatings, and specialty items.
  • Compile take-offs, supplier quotes, labor, and markups into complete, well-organized estimates for review by the Head Estimator.
  • Perform scope and specification gap analysis by identifying missing, ambiguous, or conflicting requirements before bids are submitted.
  • Track bid due dates and assemble submission documents to ensure reviews and approvals occur on schedule.
  • Maintain organized bid files, historical cost data, and bid recap information to improve future pricing accuracy.
  • Support the estimate-to-project handoff by clearly documenting assumptions, inclusions, and exclusions for Project Managers.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating templates, checklists, and takeoff standards.
  • Coordinate clearly with internal team members and external suppliers to resolve questions and align expectations.
  • Manage multiple bids at once while maintaining accuracy, organization, and adherence to deadlines.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications with strong comfort working with dimensions, weights, and geometry.
  • Construction bidding and estimating experience or training, particularly related to structural and miscellaneous steel.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets, including solid Microsoft Excel skills for calculations, organization, and data analysis.
  • Experience or familiarity with estimating and takeoff software tools such as OST (On-Screen Takeoff) or similar platforms.
  • Basic proficiency with Bluebeam or similar digital markup tools for plans and documents.
  • Strong math skills and numerical accuracy when performing take-offs and calculations.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for obtaining supplier quotes and coordinating with internal teams.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy across multiple bids and tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a deadline-driven environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Reliable, consistent in-office presence in Winter Springs, FL.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with On-Screen Takeoff (OST), the current takeoff platform used by the team.
  • Experience with Tekla EPM (formerly FabSuite), a steel-fabrication estimating and production system.
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, especially for digital takeoff and markup as the team transitions more work to this platform.
  • Prior background in structural steel or miscellaneous metal fabrication, detailing, or shop work.
  • Familiarity with AISC and AWS terminology related to steel fabrication and welding.
  • Associate degree or trade coursework in construction, welding, drafting, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in continuous improvement of processes, templates, and standards.
  • Coachability and openness to learning established estimating processes and workflows.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively within a team and independently once trained.
Work Environment

The role is primarily office-based and focused on estimating activities, with occasional time spent in the fabrication shop to better understand processes and current pricing. The position operates in a team-oriented environment where collaboration, communication, and a willingness to learn are highly valued. The schedule is full-time, Monday through Friday, and is fully on-site rather than remote. You will work with construction drawings, digital takeoff tools, spreadsheets, and specialized steel fabrication systems in a structured, process-driven setting that emphasizes dependability, accuracy, and self-directed work once training is complete.
