Junior Oracle DBAs (Database Administrators) are entry-level professionals responsible for supporting the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Oracle database systems. They assist senior DBAs in monitoring database performance, ensuring data integrity, performing backups, and applying patches or updates. Junior Oracle DBAs also help create user accounts, manage permissions, and support database security. What does a junior Oracle DBA do?

An Oracle database administrator (DBA) oversees database operations and access for a company or client. A Junior Oracle DBA is an entry-level administrator who works with Oracle databases and related software and applications. Your duties in this position include configuring and updating software, performing backup tasks to save data, handling recovery responsibilities in the event of a server failure, and undertaking regular maintenance. Your duties include ensuring optimal performance and making changes when servers are slow. You also test applications and systems after making upgrades or improvements. A junior DBA works under the supervision of a senior IT manager or DBA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior Oracle DBA?

To thrive as a Junior Oracle DBA, you need a foundational understanding of database concepts, SQL, and Oracle database architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or IT-related fields. • Lead database upgrades: Plan and execute database upgrades, including hands-on migration and upgrade activities to Oracle 19c.
  • Perform database migrations: Design and execute database platform migrations while minimizing disruption and maintaining data integrity.
  • Optimize database performance: Diagnose performance issues and implement tuning strategies across Oracle database environments.
  • Manage backup and recovery: Apply expert-level knowledge of RMAN to support robust backup, recovery, and disaster-recovery processes.
  • Maintain high availability and resilience: Work with Oracle RAC, Data Guard, partitioning, and compression technologies to support scalable and resilient database architectures.
  • Monitor database environments: Use Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control to monitor, manage, and troubleshoot database infrastructure.
  • Support underlying operating systems: Apply system-administrator-level knowledge across at least two supported platforms, such as Linux/OEL, Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX.
  • Support consulting engagements: Contribute to implementations, upgrades, migrations, troubleshooting, and other technical initiatives across client environments.
  • Estimate and deliver work accurately: Provide realistic effort estimates, establish clear commitments, and deliver work according to agreed timelines and expectations.
  • Document technical work: Maintain clear and accurate technical documentation while communicating effectively with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Solve complex technical challenges: Apply analytical thinking and creative problem-solving to diagnose issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Collaborate effectively: Work as a constructive member of distributed project teams and contribute positively to a fast-paced consulting environment.
  • Provide flexible technical support: Be available for occasional non-business-hours work when project or client requirements demand it.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of professional Oracle DBA experience, with strong hands-on expertise across Oracle 10g, 11g, 12c, and 19c.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with Oracle Engineered Systems, particularly Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) and/or Exadata.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience upgrading databases to Oracle 19c.
  • Proven experience with database platform migrations and complex Oracle database implementations.
  • Strong understanding of Oracle RDBMS architecture, administration, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced Oracle database performance tuning capabilities.
  • Expert-level knowledge of RMAN, including backup and recovery processes.
  • Hands-on experience with Oracle RAC, Data Guard, partitioning, and compression.
  • Experience using Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control for database monitoring and management.
  • System administrator-level knowledge of at least two operating systems, including Linux/OEL, Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX.
  • Strong verbal, written, organizational, and technical documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability, combined with a practical and creative approach to complex technical issues.
  • Ability to provide accurate effort estimates, manage commitments, and consistently deliver against agreed objectives.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced consulting environment, including occasional work outside standard business hours.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work productively within distributed teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Management, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Cloud experience is highly desirable, particularly hands-on experience supporting Oracle databases in cloud environments.
