Job description

We're looking for a motivated Junior Network Engineer to join our IT team and support the design, maintenance, and troubleshooting of our network infrastructure across IMTT's corporate offices and terminal environments. This earlycareer engineering role provides handson operational support, troubleshooting, and project participation under the guidance of senior engineers. It is designed for candidates seeking to deepen their technical skills while supporting a missioncritical, multisite industrial and enterprise network.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain switches, routers, firewalls, wireless systems, and related network hardware.
  • Troubleshoot Layer 1-3 issues and support end users, field technicians, and the IT Service Desk.
  • Monitor and maintain multisite LAN/WAN connectivity for corporate and terminal operations.
  • Perform routine maintenance including upgrades, firmware updates, patching, and equipment replacement.
  • Assist senior engineers with escalated issues and participate in the oncall rotation for afterhours support.
  • Work closely with senior engineers on network upgrades and projects.
  • Follow the lead of the senior network engineer and contribute to success of IMTT's network.
  • Assist senior team members with network expansion, site refresh, resiliency improvements, and infrastructure modernization projects.
  • Prepare technical documentation: diagrams, configuration templates, implementation plans, and testing/rollback steps.
  • Support the rollout of new network technologies, including testing, staging, deployment, and validation.
  • Maintain uptodate network documentation including topologies, configuration logs, SOPs, and support guides.
  • Follow IMTT change management, safety, and operational procedures to ensure reliable and compliant network operations.
  • Partner with Systems Operations, Cybersecurity, and IT Service Desk teams to deliver stable and secure network services.
  • Provide guidance to Tier I/II staff on common network issues and best practices.
  • Communicate clearly with terminal personnel regarding outages, planned work, and troubleshooting steps.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree with major in Information Technology preferred
  • 2-4 years handson experience supporting enterprise networks.
  • Experience with common networking technologies (switching, routing, VLANs, ACLS, STP, NAT, DHCP, DNS).
  • Familiarity with enterpriseclass equipment such as Cisco, Meraki, Juniper, Aruba, and various vendors.
  • Experience with network monitoring and logging platforms such as SolarWinds, Meraki Dashboard, and Panorama.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to create, read and interpret network diagrams and packet captures.
  • Excellent communication and customerservice skills within the team environment.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required or must be obtained within the HRapproved onboarding timeframe.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to IMTT terminals nationwide. Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.

Hours of Work

  • Typical hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at our New Orleans Headquarters.
  • This position requires overtime and occasional weekend work as job duties demand.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes with little or no advance notice. Travel to IMTT terminals is required, including outofstate travel.
  • Participation in the Network Engineering oncall rotation is required.

  • When working inside a terminal, use of PPE (e.g., hard hat, safety glasses, steeltoe boots, FR clothing, hearing protection) is mandatory per site requirements.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. Fieldwork may involve walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, lifting equipment up to 25 pounds, and exposure to outdoor weather.
  • There may be times when working from home is required, so the technician needs to have appropriate availability to high-speed internet at all times.
