Junior Network Operations Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Network Operations Engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Network Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as quickly troubleshooting unfamiliar network issues, adapting to 24/7 shift rotations, and managing the pressure of responding to critical incidents. To overcome these challenges, new engineers should actively seek mentorship from experienced team members, regularly review network documentation, and participate in on-the-job training sessions. Building strong communication skills is also key, as this role frequently involves collaborating with other IT teams to resolve problems efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Network Operations Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Network Operations Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting skills, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools (such as SolarWinds or Nagios), basic command-line interfaces, and certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you stand out in this role. These skills are critical for maintaining network reliability, quickly resolving issues, and supporting seamless business operations.

What are Junior Network Operations Engineers?

Junior Network Operations Engineers are entry-level IT professionals who assist in monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer networks for organizations. Their responsibilities often include responding to network alerts, assisting with network upgrades, and supporting more senior engineers with daily operations to ensure optimal network performance. They play a key role in identifying and resolving basic network issues, keeping systems running smoothly, and learning advanced networking concepts on the job. Typically, they work in network operation centers (NOCs) and may have rotating shifts to provide 24/7 coverage.

What is the difference between Junior Network Operations Engineer vs Network Support Technician?

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated technical leader to guide the Network Engineering and Operations team in delivering scalable, automated, and cloud-ready networking solutions while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to design and deliver next-generation data center fabric architectures, leveraging technologies such as VXLAN, Cisco Nexus Dashboard, Kubernetes, and AI/ML-enabled networking.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of engineers, strengthening troubleshooting capabilities, operational rigor, and adoption of network engineering best practices.
  • Drive automation strategy and execution using Ansible, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines, including the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of automation for high-impact operational and reliability use cases.
  • Own and support all operational aspects of network security infrastructure, including operating system maintenance, vulnerability management, capacity planning, lifecycle management, and certificate administration.
  • Track and manage projects, processes, and technology initiatives across the team, ensuring alignment, visibility, and timely execution.
  • Analyze historical network incidents to identify systemic issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement automated remediation to prevent recurrence.
  • Lead the review, analysis, and execution of network change requests within the data center fabric domain, ensuring adherence to change management and risk mitigation standards.
  • Develop and report operational and performance metrics using observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK to drive data-informed decisions.
  • Manage and operate data center fabric services across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, including on-premises infrastructure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Participate in incident response activities, providing technical leadership during outages and leading post-incident root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by enabling team members to proactively enhance processes, tooling, and operational maturity.
  • Lead the introduction of new processes and automation capabilities that improve scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain strong operational focus on data center fabric technologies while coordinating cross-team efforts with network security and load balancing functions to ensure end-to-end service reliability.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field preferred, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven technical expertise in fast-paced, dynamic, production environments supporting mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Extensive hands-on experience and advanced troubleshooting capabilities with data center fabric and software-defined networking (SDN) technologies, including VXLAN, NX-OS, OpenStack Neutron, Calico (Kubernetes), and enterprise routing and switching.
  • 8+ years of experience in technology roles, including 3+ years serving as a technical subject matter expert.
  • Strong understanding of, with hands-on experience with dynamic routing protocols, particularly BGP.
  • Demonstrated experience developing root cause analyses and implementing error prevention and corrective action procedures.
  • Experience defining, measuring, and reporting site reliability using SLI/SLO metrics.
  • Proven experience designing, implementing, or operating large-scale data centers and complex infrastructure environments.
  • Hands-on knowledge and operational experience with Cisco Nexus, F5, and Palo Alto platforms.
  • Experience managing and operating public cloud networking environments; Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and AWS experience preferred.
  • Strong experience with incident response, change management, and operational governance practices.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives in parallel.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly represent technical domains and team outcomes to senior leadership.
  • Proven experience automating infrastructure processes and deployments.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive and scale a culture of automation across engineering and operations teams.
