What is a junior litigation associate?

Junior Litigation Associates are early-career attorneys who support senior lawyers and partners in handling legal disputes that may go to court. Their responsibilities typically include conducting legal research, drafting documents, assisting with discovery, and preparing for hearings or trials. They work closely with clients, attend court proceedings, and learn the litigation process while developing their skills. This role is often seen as a stepping stone to becoming a senior associate or partner within a law firm.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior litigation associate?

To thrive as a Junior Litigation Associate, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and strong research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in case management systems are commonly required. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and effective communication enable you to handle complex cases and collaborate with clients and senior attorneys. These skills ensure accurate legal analysis, efficient workflow, and successful advocacy in high-stakes legal environments.

What are some common challenges faced by junior litigation associates in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Litigation Associates often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of discovery documents, adapting to fast-paced deadlines, and learning to communicate effectively with senior attorneys and clients. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to develop strong organizational habits, ask questions proactively, and seek feedback on written work and research tasks. Building relationships within your team and staying open to mentorship can also accelerate your learning and confidence in handling complex litigation matters.

Job description

Defense-side complex litigation ยท 5+ years ยท Florida Bar required

A nationally recognized labor and employment defense firm is expanding its Fort Lauderdale litigation team and is looking for a senior associate who is ready to own matters, not just work them.

This is a seat for a litigator with five or more years of defense-side complex litigation experience who has been running sophisticated cases largely on their own โ€” and wants a platform that rewards that. You'll handle matters end to end, work directly with clients, and have real room to grow your own practice. Candidates further along in their careers are encouraged to apply; some portable business is a plus at the more senior end, but it isn't a gate.

The work

You'll manage complex litigation from intake through resolution โ€” the substantive parts, not the overflow:

  • Drafting and responding to pleadings, and building case strategy from the outset
  • Owning written and electronic discovery, including e-discovery strategy on data-heavy matters
  • Drafting and arguing dispositive and non-dispositive motions
  • Taking and defending depositions
  • Leading or playing a substantial role in mediations and trials
  • Mentoring junior associates and steering litigation teams
Who this is for

Employment litigation experience is welcome, but it isnโ€™t a prerequisite. The firm is equally interested in strong commercial and complex-defense litigators from other practice areas who want to build an employment practice on a market-leading platform. If youโ€™ve been carrying hard cases and want a bigger stage to grow them on, this is worth a conversation.

You likely bring:

  • Strong academic credentials and genuinely advanced writing and advocacy
  • A track record of managing multiple complex matters without close supervision
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and the kind of presence clients and juries trust
  • A collaborative instinct โ€” you make the team around you better
  • An appetite for business development and a long-term view of your practice

Admission to the Florida Bar is required. Experience with wage-and-hour litigation, wage-and-hour compliance counseling, and Department of Labor investigations is a plus.

The platform

This is one of the most technically forward firms in its space โ€” early and serious adopters of the tools that make litigation faster and sharper, inside a culture that expects lawyers to think about how the work gets done, not just that it gets done. For a senior associate, that means better leverage on your time and more room to do the work that actually moves cases.

Why Fort Lauderdale

South Florida is one of the fastest-growing legal markets in the country, and Fort Lauderdale offers a rare combination: serious, sophisticated work alongside a genuinely good life outside the office. No state income tax, year-round coastline, and none of the cost-of-living or commute drag of the larger northern markets.

Compensation and benefits

Market-competitive compensation, with origination credit for the business you bring and a genuine path to building your own book. The package includes:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Generous paid time off and paid parental leave
  • 401(k) with carveโ€‘out election and profit sharing
  • Life insurance and longโ€‘term disability coverage
  • Employee assistance program
  • Optional critical illness, accident and hospital indemnity, studentโ€‘loan refinancing, dependent life, and pet insurance
