The IT Systems Engineer, under the direction of the Assistant Director of IT Operations, is responsible for the design, automation, and administration of enterprise server infrastructure supporting the Georgia Secretary of State. This role focuses on managing a hybrid Windows and Linux environment - including identity, virtualization, backup, and patch management - and building automations that keep systems reliable, monitored, and self-healing across on-premises and cloud platforms. The position requires strong technical expertise in systems administration, scripting, and CI/CD-driven operations, as well as the ability to lead complex projects and mentor team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Administer Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, AD Certificate Services/PKI, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Manage Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Intune for identity, device management, and endpoint compliance
  • Administer Linux servers across Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, and Rocky Linux
  • Manage Nutanix virtualization infrastructure and support VMware environments in disconnected/dark-site deployments
  • Administer Rubrik backup infrastructure, ensuring backup integrity and recovery readiness
  • Support AWS cloud resources alongside on-premises infrastructure.
  • Own server patching cycles and remediate security vulnerabilities across Windows and Linux fleets
  • Write and maintain automation using PowerShell, Bash, and Python
  • Build and maintain Ansible playbooks for configuration management across Windows and Linux
  • Develop and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure automation and deployment
  • Design and maintain infrastructure monitoring, alerting, and self-healing automation
  • Administer PAM and credential-vaulting solutions (e.g., Devolutions Server)
  • Leverage the Microsoft Graph API for identity and M365 automation tasks
  • Support server hardware (Supermicro, Dell, Nutanix), including firmware, diagnostics, and lifecycle management
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours infrastructure support and incident response
  • Mentors and provides guidance to systems administrators and junior staff
  • Contributes to safe, fair, and secure elections for the citizens of Georgia
  • Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Expert-level scripting ability in PowerShell and Bash for infrastructure automation
  • Strong hands-on experience administering Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, AD CS/PKI, DNS, and DHCP
  • Proven experience with Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Intune administration
  • Strong Linux server administration skills across Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, or comparable RHEL-family distributions
  • Demonstrated experience building automation with Ansible across both Windows and Linux.
  • Experience administering enterprise backup platforms (Rubrik or comparable), ensuring backup integrity and recovery readiness
  • Proficiency with Git-based CI/CD pipelines (GitLab or similar) for infrastructure deployment
  • Solid understanding of server patching processes and vulnerability remediation
  • Experience with PAM and credential-vaulting solutions
  • Working knowledge of web/TLS certificate management, including certificate chains, PKI trust hierarchies, and providers such as Let's Encrypt and Cloudflare.
  • Strong documentation, design, and technical writing skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities for cross-team work
  • Ability to manage multiple high-impact projects with minimal supervision

SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:

This position has no direct reports but may serve as a technical lead and mentor for systems administrators and contractors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field OR equivalent hands- on experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of professional experience administering enterprise Windows and Linux server environments.
  • Working knowledge of core infrastructure services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, virtualization)
  • Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, or Python)
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex system and infrastructure issues with limited supervision.
  • Valid Class C Georgia Driver's License and satisfactory motor vehicle record.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered to meet the minimum qualifications. However, the required five (5) years of experience administering enterprise Windows and Linux server environments cannot be substituted by education alone.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree from a nationally accredited university in Computer Science, Information

Systems, or related field.

  • Seven (7) or more years of systems engineering experience in enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Nutanix or VMware virtualization, Microsoft 365/Entra ID, and enterprise backup platforms (Rubrik or comparable).
  • Industry certifications such as Microsoft (AZ-104, AZ-800), Red Hat (RHCSA/RHCE), Nutanix (NCP-MCI), or equivalent.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD-driven operations (Ansible, GitLab, or comparable).
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring/alerting tools and documenting system architectures.

Minimum Qualifications:
