Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Roadway Design Project Manager to lead and manage NCDOT and municipal roadway design projects from planning and preliminary engineering through final design and construction support. This role emphasizes overall project management, quality assurance, client relationship management, and staff mentorship, while maintaining technical oversight of roadway design deliverables.

The Senior Roadway Design Project Manager will serve as the primary point of contact for clients and agencies, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with NCDOT standards and contractual requirements.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Manage roadway and highway design projects for NCDOT and municipal clients, including scope, schedule, budget, and resource planning
  • Serve as primary client and agency liaison; lead coordination with NCDOT, municipalities, subconsultants, and stakeholders
  • Oversee development of roadway design deliverables, ensuring technical quality and consistency with agency standards
  • Lead and implement quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) processes throughout project lifecycles
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including roadway, drainage, traffic, structures, utilities, survey, and environmental staff
  • Mentor junior engineers and project staff; support staff development, performance feedback, and workload planning
  • Review and approve design calculations, plan sets, and supporting documentation
  • Support proposal development, fee estimates, contract negotiations, and business development efforts
  • Monitor project risks, manage changes, and proactively address issues that may impact delivery
  • Participate in public meetings, agency reviews, and project presentations as required
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or related field plus 6 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or ability to obtain reciprocity within 6 months
  • 6 years of roadway design experience, including exposure to DOT or municipal projects.
  • Valid US Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review
  • Due to the nature of the projects a US Citizenship is required 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience managing NCDOT and/or municipal roadway design projects
  • Working knowledge of NCDOT policies, design manuals, and PS&E development
  • Expereinced with roadway design and project coordination tools
  • 6 years of strong understanding of NCDOT policies, design manuals, and PS&E development
  • 10 years of progressive roadway design and project management experience
  • Experience managing on-call contracts or alternative delivery projects (e.g., design-build).
  • Familiarity with ProjectWise, Bluebeam, scheduling software, and cost tracking tools
  • Strong leadership, communication, and client relationship management skills
  • Proven ability to mentor staff and lead multi-discipline design teams
