Position Summary: The Junior High Guidance Counselor plays a critical leadership role in supporting students' academic achievement, personal and social development, and career exploration. This role requires organization and extends beyond traditional counseling responsibilities; you will serve as a key operational leader with primary focus on state testing, master scheduling, student academic planning, as well as organizing major junior high events.
Reports To: Junior High Principal
Knowledge, Skills & Implementation
  • 194 Days, follows school calendar, present for all students days plus additional days
  • Plan, schedule, facilitate, and execute all ILEARN checkpoints and summative assessments in collaboration with teachers and administrators
  • Coordinate all state and local assessments, including ILEARN, NWEA, OLSAT, and other required testing programs
  • Manage testing schedules, student rosters, accommodations, testing logistics, and compliance requirements
  • Proctor ILEARN assessments and all necessary make-up exams at the discretion of administration, communicating with parents, students and staff
  • Track assessment data and work collaboratively with teachers and administration to make informed decisions regarding instruction and interventions
  • Analyze and report all student performance data to identify factors negatively affecting academic achievement and support intervention planning
  • Plan, facilitate, and execute the junior high master schedule, including teacher and student schedules, finalizing in PowerSchool by required deadline of each year
  • Coordinate schedule changes, placement decisions, and academic interventions as needed
  • Support student transitions between grade levels and from elementary to junior high
  • Assist students and families with educational planning and academic goal setting, including 7th grade graduation plan.
  • Maintain accurate records and update all Graduation Plan information in the district Student Information System (SIS) by deadline of each school year
  • Lead 21st Century Scholars planning, communication, and implementation
  • Plan, schedule, and host parent nights to inform families about 21st Century Scholars requirements and procedures
  • Counsel students regarding interests, aptitudes, abilities, personality characteristics, and future educational/vocational planning.
  • Engage students to remain focused and enthusiastic about their education and future opportunities. Providing encouragement to achieve goals.
  • Monitor and track Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) updates, laws, policies, and educational requirements monthly, updating administration regarding implementation
  • Reports all necessary information accurately, regarding counseling, testing and scheduling issues to Junior High Principal
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the corporation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned at the request of the principal or other administrative staff as designated by the superintendent

Student Support & Counseling Services
  • Collect and organize student information through records, assessments, interviews, and collaboration with staff and families, providing counseling services when concerns arise
  • Counsel students with behavior concerns and assist with intervention planning
  • Refer students to appropriate outside services and supports when needed
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, teachers, and administration

Special Education & Compliance Support
  • Serve as PAR (Public Agency Representative) during case conferences and transition conferences at the recommendation of administration
  • Collaborate with special education staff, teachers, and administration to support student success and compliance

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Valid Indiana School Counselor License required, or actively working toward Indiana licensure in School Counseling
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively
  • Knowledge of Indiana state testing systems, PowerSchool, and student data platforms preferred
  • Experience in junior high, middle school, or secondary education settings preferred
