Job description

Responsibilities
This Systems Engineer, Junior role is split evenly between software development and infrastructure support for two BioTeam customers at NIH. This position works collaboratively with BioTeam consultants and customers to provide IT and software solutions that best fit customer requirements.
The employee will need to be comfortable balancing two distinct workstreams within the same week:
50% Software Development: The software development half of the role focuses on building and enhancing scientific software features that advance the customers' research missions.
  • Build and enhance scientific software applications and features.
  • Support research-focused workflows through custom software solutions.
  • Participate in proof-of-concept, product development, and customer software projects.
  • Help identify project changes and improvements needed to meet objectives.

50% Infrastructure Support: The infrastructure support half focuses on scientific IT and storage environments, keeping research computing systems reliable and performant.
  • Implement and support scientific computing infrastructure solutions.
  • Enable researchers to effectively use HPC (High-Performance Computing) and scientific IT environments.
  • Maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot HPC clusters, storage systems, and related infrastructure.
  • Work with project managers to deliver projects on time and within budget while managing customer expectations.

Additional responsibilities include:
  • A willingness to acquire new skills, learn from others, multitask, and work on projects outside of the immediate area of expertise
  • Work independently on multiple projects at once
  • Develop or participate in the creation of SOPs and IT processes
  • Maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot HPC and storage infrastructure

The position is hybrid; combination of on-site at our corporate headquarters location in Dulles, VA. and remote work. Able to provide own working space and telecommunications connections (e.g., high-speed internet with a secured network). Must be able to travel to NIH campus 1-2 times a month in Bethesda, MD, or as requested by the customer.
Any hybrid work schedule would require customer approval. The NIH has established policies for on-site vs hybrid work which varies across divisions and contracts. Remote work must be coordinated with the team lead and/or NIH POC, ensuring there is zero interruption with the delivery of services.
Requirements
Requirements:
  • B.S. in a life science, computer science, computer engineering or systems engineering related field
  • Software development experience in Python and Typescript
  • U.S. Citizen - able to obtain a U.S. government security clearance
  • Proven experience in analyzing and resolving complex problems quickly, efficiently, and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated strategic project and work planning organization skills

Desired
  • Experience managing or supporting scientific HPC infrastructure (storage, network, computing)
  • Familiarity with AWS and/or GCP
  • Familiarity with Vue
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills
  • 1-2 years programming experience
