Job Description:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Civil Engineer to support our growing substation engineering team. This role focuses on civil site development for electrical utility substations, including grading, drainage, stormwater management, and site layout design.
The ideal candidate is eager to develop technical expertise in substation site design and collaborate across disciplines to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for utility clients. This role offers a strong technical foundation in civil site design within the rapidly growing utility sector. This role will provide hands-on experience with utility substation site development and mentorship from experienced civil and substation engineers.
Essential Functions
  • Assist in the development of civil site plans for electrical substations
  • Perform grading and drainage design to support substation layouts and equipment
  • Support preparation of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) and erosion/sediment control designs
  • Develop stormwater management calculations and drainage reports
  • Assist with earthwork analysis and balancing (cut/fill optimization)
  • Coordinate with electrical, structural, and environmental teams to integrate civil designs
  • Prepare construction drawings, details, and specifications
  • Support permitting efforts with local and state agencies
  • Conduct occasional site visits to support design validation and construction activities
  • Support other utility teams (electric distribution, natural gas) for miscellaneous including but not limited
    • Field data collection
    • Civil 3D CAD work, specifically base mapping and addressing markups
    • Records research for infrastructure
  • Support industrial vertical for civil engineering work like substation site development, may include other general civil work such as pavement design, permitting/ordinance review and requirements

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience (internships/co-ops encouraged)
  • Familiarity with site civil design principles (grading, drainage, erosion control)
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred
  • Basic understanding of hydrology and hydraulics concepts
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification or ability to obtain preferred
  • Exposure to utility or substation projects is preferred
  • Experience with stormwater modeling software (e.g., Hydraflow, HEC-RAS, HydroCAD) is preferred
  • Knowledge of local permitting and stormwater regulations is preferred
  • Familiarity with geotechnical coordination and site development constraints preferred

Location Note:
This is an on-site position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate's location.
Salary Range:
$60,000-85,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
