Job description

Modjeski and Masters, Inc. is excited to offer a junior to mid-level opportunity to gain practical, hands-on engineering experience for an engineer with a civil/structural background. This position includes hands-on bridge inspection, condition assessment and reporting, repair design and detailing, load capacity rating, emergency response, construction engineering, and on-site monitoring of bridge repairs. This position also offers the opportunity to join our rope access program. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of engineers, technicians, and drafters and will be based in our Jacksonville, Florida office, with a work area concentrated in the southeast United States but extending throughout the country.
What We're Looking For
  • A minimum of a BS degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 2-5 years relevant experience in bridge inspection
  • Coursework focused in structural engineering is preferred.
  • Licensed EI or EIT with the goal of pursuing PE licensure.
  • Must be able to pass a federal security background check for e-RAILSAFE and TWIC.
  • Candidates are expected to possess keen attention to detail, demonstrate a strong understanding of structural fundamentals, and exhibit a high level of initiative.
What You'll Do
  • Perform field inspections as part of a team of engineers.
  • Prepare inspection reports with recommendations for maintenance and repair for all types and sizes of highway and railroad bridges, including fixed bridges, such as suspension and cable-stayed bridges, trusses, girder and beam bridges; and, movable bridges, such as vertical lift, swing span, and bascule bridges.
  • Prepare and detail engineered repair plans, specifications, construction cost estimates, and bidding documents. Produce engineering calculations for repair elements. Provide peer review of engineering calculations and design.
  • Conduct analysis and calculations for load capacity rating of bridges using computer aided and hand calculation methods.
  • Bridge construction oversight and monitoring, inspecting, and documenting individual activities performed by the contractor to monitor compliance with overall contract specifications, plans and other contract provisions.
  • Emergency response to bridge related emergencies.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Have a strong understanding of structural engineering fundamentals, including being able to identify load paths, quantify member loads, and understand how loads affect structures and their members.
  • Must have a good command of the English language with good oral and written communication skills. Technical writing proficiency is preferred.
  • Have an understanding and working knowledge of how to read design plans and details, shop drawings, and as-built plans.
  • Must be physically capable of climbing ladders and stairways, working from walkways and platforms at high elevations, such as on high bridge superstructures and working from aerial access equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, CADD (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation) is preferred.
  • Preferred to have an understanding and working knowledge of how to interpret construction specifications and manufacturer's technical data.
  • Preferred to have a basic familiarity with construction contracts and with construction management processes including communication, documenting procedures, quality control and quality assurance procedures and responsibilities
Working Conditions:
  • Position requires a combination of both office and field duties.
  • Position involves working conditions such as climbing on superstructures and substructures of bridges.
  • Requires a certain amount of physicality and a comfort level with heights for the inspection portion of this position.
  • Position requires a varying amount of travel with overnight stays, dependent upon assignment and available work, with the potential for short-term relocation. Expected travel ranges up to 30% of time. Compensation is provided.
  • Partial-week work from home is allowed after 6-months of successful employment
