Junior Civil Estimator
Job Overview
Spartan Earthworks, LLC is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Civil Estimator to join our preconstruction team in Charlotte, NC. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career construction professional who is interested in developing a career in civil construction estimating.
The Junior Civil Estimator will work alongside Spartan's estimating, operations, and leadership teams to assist with quantity takeoffs, bid preparation, project document review, subcontractor and vendor pricing, and preconstruction coordination.
We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of construction fundamentals, the ability to read plans and drawings, strong analytical and organizational skills, and a desire to learn the estimating side of earthwork and site development. Previous civil estimating experience is helpful but not required. Relevant education, internships, co-ops, field experience, or construction experience will be considered.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist with reviewing civil plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, bid documents, and other project information.
  • Perform and assist with quantity takeoffs for civil/sitework scopes such as earthwork, grading, utilities, storm drainage, erosion control, and roadwork.
  • Assist with developing project estimates, budgets, and bid proposals.
  • Solicit and organize subcontractor and vendor pricing and assist with bid comparisons.
  • Help identify scope gaps, discrepancies, constructability concerns, and potential cost impacts.
  • Assist with reviewing drawing revisions, addenda, and changes during the bidding and construction process.
  • Maintain organized estimating files, takeoffs, bid documents, proposals, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with preliminary project schedules, sequencing, and production assumptions.
  • Participate in project handoffs from estimating to operations following award.
  • Work with project managers and field teams to develop an understanding of actual production rates, costs, and construction methods.
  • Maintain bid tracking and other preconstruction reporting.
  • Communicate effectively with vendors, subcontractors, project teams, and leadership.
  • Continue developing knowledge of civil construction methods, estimating practices, and estimating/takeoff software.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Building Sciences, or a related field preferred. Current students nearing graduation may also be considered.
  • 0-3 years of construction, estimating, project engineering, internship, co-op, or related experience.
  • Basic understanding of construction plans, drawings, specifications, and quantities.
  • Interest in civil/site development construction, including earthwork, grading, utilities, storm drainage, erosion control, and roadway construction.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability and willingness to learn quantity takeoffs, estimating, bid preparation, and civil construction methods.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, AGTEK, HCSS, PlanSwift, or similar construction/estimating software is a plus but not required.
  • Valid driver's license.

Schedule:
  • Monday-Friday, standard daytime hours; 8 am - 5 pm

Job Type:
  • Full-time position, averaging 40 hours per week

Compensation:
  • $65,000-$95,000 annually

  • 401k with a Safe Harbor match formula of 100% of employee contributions up to 3% of their compensation, then 50% matching contribution of the next 2% of employee's compensation

Ability to Commute/Relocate:
  • Charlotte, NC: Ability to reliably commute or willingness to relocate before starting work (required).
  • Greenville to be considered with commute to Charlotte 2 days per week.
