To thrive as a Junior Business Analyst, you need analytical thinking, basic business knowledge, and a relevant degree such as business, finance, or information systems. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, SQL, and data visualization software, as well as understanding of business process modeling, is typically expected. Strong communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail help you collaborate effectively with stakeholders and translate requirements into actionable insights. These skills ensure accurate data analysis and support informed decision-making within organizations.

What is a junior business analyst?

A junior business analyst (BA) works with project teams and a senior business analyst to make sure the products or applications in development meet the needs of the end users. Data analysis is one of their top responsibilities, and they report your findings to the senior analyst and the developers. Job duties include gathering systems information, analyzing how projects affect business outcomes, and providing feedback to developers working on the deliverable. It is their responsibility to help make sure the final deliverable meets project specifications and qualifications.

What is the difference between Junior Business Analyst vs Business Analyst?

AspectJunior Business AnalystBusiness Analyst

Employer & Industry UsageCommon in finance, IT, consulting firms, and corporate sectorsUsed across similar industries, often with higher expectations for experience

The main difference between a Junior Business Analyst and a Business Analyst lies in experience and responsibility level. Junior Business Analysts typically handle entry-level tasks under supervision, while Business Analysts take on more complex projects independently. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but the Business Analyst role demands more experience and expertise.

Can I work as a junior business analyst with no experience?

Junior business analyst roles often require some familiarity with business processes, data analysis, and tools like Excel or SQL, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with limited or no formal experience if they demonstrate strong analytical skills and a willingness to learn. Entry-level positions may also value relevant coursework, internships, or certifications such as CBAP or CCBA. Gaining foundational knowledge and technical skills can improve your chances of securing a junior business analyst position without prior work experience.

What are some common challenges faced by junior business analysts when working on cross-functional teams?

Junior Business Analysts often encounter challenges related to bridging communication gaps between technical and non-technical stakeholders. They may need to translate business requirements into technical specifications and ensure both sides have a clear understanding of project goals. Additionally, adapting to different working styles and managing shifting priorities can be demanding. Proactively seeking feedback, asking clarifying questions, and collaborating closely with team members help overcome these obstacles and support project success.

Job description

Grey Parrot Systems (GPARROT) is hiring an experienced Lead IT Business Analyst with deep utilities industry expertise and strong Azure DevOps proficiency to lead requirements gathering, analysis, and delivery coordination across complex enterprise technology programs.

About Grey Parrot Systems

Grey Parrot Systems (GPARROT) is a women-owned, BEP-certified IT services firm headquartered in Naperville, IL. We partner with mid-market enterprises to deliver AI-first, governance-driven digital transformation. Our team of seasoned CIO/CTO practitioners works side-by-side with clients across retail, logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare โ€” and we're growing.

About the Role

This is a lead-level IT Business Analyst role for a seasoned BA who combines deep utilities industry knowledge with strong technical acumen and Azure DevOps delivery experience. You will own requirements elicitation, documentation, and stakeholder alignment across complex utility enterprise programs โ€” bridging the gap between business operations and technology teams while managing work items, user stories, and delivery tracking in Azure DevOps. If you have 8+ years of IT BA experience with proven utilities industry depth and Azure DevOps hands-on expertise โ€” we want to hear from you.

Must-Have Skills

  • 8+ years of IT Business Analyst experience โ€” lead or senior level
  • Deep utilities industry experience โ€” electric, gas, water, or multi-commodity utility operations, billing, asset management, or customer service programs
  • Strong hands-on Azure DevOps experience โ€” managing backlogs, user stories, epics, work items, sprints, and delivery tracking
  • Strong requirements elicitation, documentation, and analysis skills โ€” BRDs, functional specs, user stories, process flows, and use cases
  • Experience working in Agile / Scrum delivery environments โ€” sprint planning, backlog grooming, and stakeholder reviews
  • Ability to facilitate workshops, requirements sessions, and cross-functional stakeholder meetings with confidence
  • Strong understanding of utility business processes โ€” metering, billing, outage management, grid operations, customer communications, or regulatory compliance
  • Experience collaborating with engineering, architecture, QA, and business teams to deliver complex technology programs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills โ€” able to translate complex technical and business requirements for diverse stakeholder audiences
  • Ability to work on-site in Bellevue / Bothell, WA

What You'll Do

  • Lead requirements elicitation, documentation, and validation across complex utility enterprise IT programs โ€” working directly with business SMEs, operations teams, and technology stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive requirements artifacts โ€” BRDs, functional specifications, user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, data flow diagrams, and use cases
  • Own and manage the Azure DevOps backlog โ€” creating and refining epics, features, user stories, tasks, and acceptance criteria for development teams
  • Facilitate requirements workshops, stakeholder reviews, and sprint ceremonies โ€” ensuring alignment between business needs and technical delivery
  • Analyze and document current-state and future-state business processes across utility operations โ€” identifying gaps, risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Serve as the primary liaison between utility business stakeholders and technology teams โ€” translating business requirements into technically accurate, actionable user stories
  • Track and communicate delivery progress, risks, and dependencies using Azure DevOps dashboards and reporting
  • Support UAT planning and execution โ€” coordinating with business users and QA teams to validate delivered solutions against accepted requirements
  • Identify and manage requirements-related risks and issues โ€” escalating to project leadership with clear impact assessments
  • Mentor and guide junior Business Analysts on requirements best practices, Azure DevOps workflows, and utilities domain knowledge
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of BA practices, templates, and delivery standards across GPARROT engagements
