What are Junior Biomedical Scientists?

Junior Biomedical Scientists are entry-level professionals who work in laboratories, primarily within hospitals or research institutions, to analyze biological samples and assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. They support senior scientists by preparing specimens, conducting routine tests, and maintaining laboratory equipment. These roles are crucial in ensuring accurate and timely results that aid doctors in patient care. Junior Biomedical Scientists usually work under supervision while gaining experience and further qualifications to progress in their careers.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Biomedical Scientists when transitioning from academic studies to a laboratory work environment?

Junior Biomedical Scientists often find adjusting to the fast-paced, regulated laboratory setting challenging compared to the more flexible environment of academic studies. They must quickly become proficient with standard operating procedures, quality control documentation, and safety regulations. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams and managing workload priorities, especially under time constraints, are also key adjustments. Support from senior colleagues and structured onboarding programs can help ease this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Biomedical Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Biomedical Scientist, you need a solid background in biological sciences, laboratory techniques, and typically a degree accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) or equivalent. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), diagnostic equipment, and adherence to quality control protocols is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong teamwork and communication skills help you excel in collaborative lab environments. These skills and qualities ensure accurate testing, reliable results, and effective contributions to patient diagnosis and care.

About the Role
Insight Surgery help surgeons plan the most complex surgeries, designing and manufacturing cutting edge patient-specific medical devices including anatomical models, surgical cutting guides and complex custom implants partnering with a number of large institutions across the USA and with the NHS in the UK. This is achieved by delivering a unique Point of Care service model.
We are looking for a passionate Biomedical Engineer to join our growing team and help design patient-specific medical devices and surgical solutions. In this role, you will transform medical imaging data into custom surgical cutting and drilling guides, using planning tools that directly support surgeons and improve patient outcomes.

  • Project manage and own the end-to-end design workflow, ensuring compliance with the ISO 13485 certified Quality Management System.
  • Use validated segmentation software to convert patient scan data into 3D anatomical models in preparation for clinical cases.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and clinicians throughout the planning and design phases to design and implement custom-made medical devices.
  • Use CAD to design solutions for a broad range of clinical indications.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and calibration of facility equipment in line with the scheduled plan.
  • Prepare the design files for 3D printing and production workflows, print devices to a high standard, then complete post-processing, finishing and inspection.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering or a similar related discipline.
  • Experience using enterprise-level medical segmentation software.
  • Experience using CAD software to design medical devices.
