Role Overview
Our Apex client is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to support a full-time research-focused position within an advanced autonomy and systems engineering division. This organization conducts research in support of U.S. Department of Defense sponsors, with a primary focus on autonomous and uncrewed aircraft programs. Core areas of expertise include autonomous systems, systems engineering, avionics engineering, embedded software development, and test and evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation.
  • Design, test, and develop computer software to meet program requirements.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts.
  • Contribute to research reports, presentations, white papers, and competitive proposals.
  • Develop software requirements and design using approved coding standards and processes.
  • Provide software development estimates and ensure software meets military, safety, and security standards.
  • Act as a software technical focal point to sponsors for assigned projects.
  • Create and deliver technical presentations.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 2 years of related experience, OR a Master's degree in the same fields with 0 years of related experience.
Technical Skills:
  • Experience developing software for complex systems using disciplined approaches.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ languages.
  • Experience with common scripting languages, including bash and Python.
  • Experience developing software using Linux GCC compilers and related build and debugging tools.
  • Experience developing software on Linux and deploying to Linux target systems.
  • Familiarity with multi-threaded and multi-process concepts and applications.
  • Familiarity with common software IPC mechanisms (e.g., shared memory, pub-sub messaging, RPC).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience developing embedded software or software for complex military systems.
  • Experience with containerized software development and multi-threaded/multi-process development.
  • Experience with software for autonomous systems (UAS, USV, UGV, UUV).
  • Experience developing and integrating software interfaces to sensor systems.
  • Experience with secure or safety-critical systems development.
  • Knowledge of avionics data buses (e.g., MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429), tactical data links, or military radios.
  • Familiarity with military open software standards (e.g., MOSA, FACE, OMS, VICTORY).
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, Git, VMs, containers, SITL, HITL, DevOps, DevSecOps, or CI/CD.
Travel Requirements
Travel for this position is approximately 10%-25%.
Compensation & Benefits
The estimated pay range for this position is $50.00/hr to $70.00/hr, with a potential salary range of $108,540.00 to $147,300.00 upon conversion. A comprehensive benefits package is available to eligible employees.
