What is a judicial internship?

A judicial internship is a temporary position in which a law student, or sometimes a recent graduate, works closely with a judge and their chambers. Interns typically assist with legal research, drafting opinions, preparing case summaries, and observing court proceedings. This experience provides valuable insight into the judicial process and helps interns develop legal writing and research skills. Judicial internships are often unpaid and usually take place during the summer or academic year.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect during a judicial internship?

As a judicial intern, you can expect to assist with legal research, draft memoranda, summarize case files, and observe court proceedings. You may also help prepare bench briefs and gain firsthand insight into judicial decision-making processes. The role often involves close collaboration with law clerks and judges, offering valuable opportunities to develop your legal writing and analytical skills. The work environment is typically professional and requires attention to detail, discretion, and a strong work ethic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Judicial Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Judicial Intern, you generally need strong legal research and writing skills, a solid understanding of legal principles, and current enrollment in or graduation from law school. Proficiency with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and familiarity with court procedures are typically expected. Attention to detail, discretion, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accuracy in legal work, uphold confidentiality, and support meaningful contributions to judicial chambers.
