The High School Insider Intern supports newsroom initiatives by gaining hands-on experience in professional journalism, including covering breaking news, writing feature and enterprise stories, and creating multimedia content. Through a 6-week hybrid internship program, the intern will develop reporting, writing, and storytelling skills with guidance from newsroom mentors, training, and workshops. The primary focus is to produce impactful, high-quality work while learning and contributing to the dynamic environment of an award-winning newsroom.
Requirements:
- Research, pitch, report, write, and produce original feature and enterprise stories that highlight underreported issues, perspectives, and experiences within local communities.
- Cover assigned stories across a variety of topics, including news, features, sports, arts, entertainment, and community events, while collaborating with fellow interns, editors, and mentors.
- Gather information through interviews, observations, research, and other reporting techniques to develop accurate, compelling, and engaging content.
- Produce and publish multimedia content, including written articles, video segments, podcasts, and other digital storytelling formats.
- Develop and execute social media strategies to promote, distribute, and amplify published content across multiple platforms.
- Apply foundational journalism principles, including news gathering, interviewing, writing, editing, sourcing, and storytelling techniques.
- Verify information, fact-check sources, and assist with copy editing to ensure accuracy, credibility, and adherence to editorial standards.
- Demonstrate sound journalistic judgment and ethical decision-making while maintaining professionalism, integrity, and objectivity.
- Build media literacy skills by critically evaluating information sources, identifying misinformation, and understanding the role of journalism in informing communities.
- Present stories, projects, and work products to peers, mentors, community members, and other audiences as part of professional development and program activities.

- Willingness to work irregular and/or long hours as needed.
- Capable of sitting and/or standing for periods of up to 6 hours.
- Able to lift, carry, and handle up to 30 pounds of equipment.
- Resides in Los Angeles County, Ventura County, or Orange County.
