What is a Jesuit?

Jesuits are members of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola. They are known for their commitment to education, intellectual research, social justice, and missionary work around the world. Jesuits take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and often serve as priests, teachers, and community leaders. Their influence is seen in many schools, universities, and charitable organizations globally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jesuit?

To thrive as a Jesuit, you need a deep commitment to spiritual formation, strong theological knowledge, and completion of extensive religious training, typically including higher education in philosophy and theology. Familiarity with Ignatian spiritual practices, proficiency in multiple languages, and experience in pastoral or educational settings are common requirements. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a dedication to service help Jesuits connect with diverse communities and support their missions. These skills and qualities are essential for effectively serving others, advancing educational and spiritual goals, and fulfilling the Jesuit mission worldwide.

How does a Jesuit typically balance teaching responsibilities with community service and spiritual commitments?

Jesuits often manage a dynamic schedule that incorporates teaching, community service, and spiritual practices. In educational settings, they may spend part of their day instructing students and preparing lessons, while also dedicating time to mentoring, participating in campus ministry, and engaging in outreach programs. Collaboration with other Jesuits and lay colleagues is common, allowing for shared responsibilities and the ability to address diverse community needs. Maintaining a balance involves strong time management skills and a commitment to the Jesuit mission of service and education.

The key difference lies in Jesuits' specific order membership and their focus on education and outreach.

Job description

Campus Minister for Service and Justice
Walsh Jesuit High School is seeking a campus minister for the Office of Mission and Identity to vision, develop, plan, and coordinate the school’s service and justice formation opportunities for students. Primary responsibilities include developing and overseeing Walsh Jesuit’s comprehensive Christian service and justice programs, experiences, retreats, and immersion trips through a lens of Ignatian spirituality rooted in our Jesuit, Catholic identity.
Reporting directly to the Director of Student Formation and Belonging, this campus minister serves on a team of 3–4 ministers to coordinate and lead service and justice initiatives while also supporting other aspects of student formation and belonging (e.g., retreats, belonging initiatives, prayer groups, sacraments, etc.) that the Office of Mission and Identity sponsors.
The work schedule for this 10+ month position generally mirrors the school’s academic calendar with the expectation that the minister also will work approximately 15 days each summer. This summer work includes facilitating and serving as a chaperone on a student immersion trip, coordinating the school’s weekly ministry to people experiencing homelessness (Labre), and co-facilitation of retreat leader formation and the retreat for new students 1–2 weeks prior to the start of school.
Major Responsibilities
  • Christian Service Coordination – Develop and coordinate Christian service experiences for students including management of the required service-hours tracking platform. Recruit and support adult chaperones and student leaders to assist with services ministries (e.g., Labre, Sophomore Service, etc.).
  • Social Justice Experiences – Coordinate and oversee student/chaperone experiences of solidarity and social justice rooted in our Ignatian and Christian values (e.g., Ignatian Family Teach-In, Arrupe Leadership Summit, etc.).
  • Immersion Trip Experiences – Develop and coordinate all immersion trips, including student/chaperone formation before, during, and after immersion experiences, and foster relationships with partner institutions.
  • Service and Justice Coordination – Through a weekly Christian service meeting and regular dialogue with moderators, serve as coordinator of student groups and clubs that focus on social ministries and advocacy (e.g. Jesuit Refugee Service, Green Team, Fair Trade, Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice, etc.).
  • In-School Service/Justice Initiatives – Identify, develop, and offer all-school initiatives and daily activity (Magis) period opportunities for students that promote awareness of monthly mission themes (e.g., prayer services, masses, mission collections, etc.).
  • Student Formation and Belonging – Serve as a key collaborator with other members of the mission office in regular support of retreats, belonging initiatives, prayer groups, sacraments, and other thematic experiences directed by the mission leadership team.
Core Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in theology, pastoral ministry, religious education, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of professional ministry and/or administrative leadership experience.
  • Strong pastoral presence and ability to connect well with adolescents.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative leadership skills.
  • Adaptable, team-player willing and able to help manage and support multiple projects in various areas of the mission office.
  • Commitment to Jesuit values, faith-based student formation, and inclusive building of community.
Compensation and Benefits
This full-time contracted position offers a competitive salary along with excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance and a 401k plan with matching contribution.
Employment Philosophy
Commensurate with its mission, Walsh Jesuit High School strives to develop a community that represents the diversity of society in general. As such, and as an equal opportunity employer, the school is committed to a diverse workforce.
