Job description

The Ice Rink Associate helps run the events in the Mullins Center Community Ice Rink. They will operate the cash register and take point-of-sale payments and tend the skate rental room, issuing and returning rental skates. They will perform light cleaning and janitorial duties around the Rink. Ice skating ability is a plus, but not a requirement. 

This role pays an hourly rate of $15.00 - $17.00

This position will remain open until November 27, 2026.


This position is based at our Mullins Center Community Ice Rink located on the campus of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. The Mullins Center Community Ice Rink is the home of UMass men's ice hockey, serving as their main practice and training facility. It serves the surrounding community, offering ice time rentals, and provides the general public access to public skating, ice hockey, figure skating, and private party events.


  • Opens cash register and performs point-of-sale cash handling. Will understand and execute our provided cash handling policies and procedures.
  • Will become PCI compliant via PCI training (credit card handling security protocols).
  • Responsible for all rink monetary transactions during assigned shift.
  • Acts as a representative for the Mullins Community Ice Rink to the general public; must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Ice Rink, including schedule, prices, procedures, and programs offered.
  • Deals knowledgeably, pleasantly, and professionally with the general public on the telephone and in person.
  • Responsible for patron safety and relations in the upstairs lobby area and other areas as assigned.
  • Performs duties of cashier during public events; must be able to maintain composure and cash register accuracy during busy events, keep an accurate cash tally, and perform shift-end deposits accurately.
  • Performs light janitorial duties in the areas of the rink as required: reception office, lobbies, bathrooms, hockey benches, and bleachers. This involves sweeping trash, mopping up spills, and taking out full trash and recycling.
  • Opens and closes Rink as needed.
  • Assists with game day ice operations for UMass Hockey games on game days.
  • Tend to the skate rental room and act as skate guard for public and private skating events.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Have good communication skills: ability to work courteously and professionally with all customers, co-workers, managers, volunteers & guests.
  • Must be punctual and organized.
  • Must be able to follow protocols and procedures and be able to take direction.
  • Must be able to keep accurate sales records and be able to maintain accurate cash counts.
  • Ice skating ability is a plus, but not required.
  • Weekend availability is a requirement.
