Custodial Shift Lead

Position Overview:

The Shift Lead supports daily janitorial operations by setting the standard for cleaning quality, coordinating team activities, and serving as the first point of contact for staff on-site. This is a hands-on role responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and well-managed school environments while supporting staff performance and communication. The Shift Lead reports to the Area Supervisor and takes direction to ensure service expectations are met.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead by example in cleaning standards, safety, and professionalism
  • Open and secure school facilities at designated times, including monitoring and managing lighting for energy efficiency
  • Perform routine and detailed cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, trash removal, restroom cleaning, dusting, and floor care
  • Assign and monitor daily tasks to ensure completion and quality standards are met
  • Conduct basic inspections and address cleaning or service issues as they arise
  • Communicate site needs, issues, and supply requirements to the Area Supervisor
  • Train and support team members on proper cleaning procedures and safety practices
  • Use cleaning equipment and products safely and effectively
  • Maintain positive working relationships with school staff, including principals and teachers
  • Support weekend and special event coverage by communicating with facility users (e.g., sponsors, event coordinators) and assisting with school and community events such as sports tournaments, performances, etc.

Additional Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining assigned areas, including classrooms, cafeterias, and outside grounds, and following direction as needed
  • Ability to work at a fast pace, manage multiple priorities, and complete tasks in a timely manner, including responding to emergency or as-needed cleanup situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with leadership, coworkers, and site staff, contributing to overall team success
  • Ability to maintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and professional appearance
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail when performing cleaning tasks and resetting areas, including moving light furniture for cleaning and events
  • Ability to read and write to follow instructions, schedules, and safety procedures
  • Ability to perform additional duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent standing, walking, pushing, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching, squatting, and crawling.
  • Must be able to work in educational environments and temperatures, including exposure to noise, heat, cold, and indoor/outdoor conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds frequently.
  • Previous supervisory experience in custodial management, with strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
