Job description

Anesthesia Technologist

Summary

The Anesthesia Technologist is a member of staff who provides technical support services to the clinical staff and to the department. The incumbent is responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of anesthesia machines.

Responsibilities
  • Identifies electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines, including those of system set up procedures, system leak detection, and calibration techniques for each anesthesia monitoring function.
  • Identifies and resolves electronic or mechanical problems with commonly employed anesthesia equipment including physiologic monitors for ECG, NIBP, SA02, ETC02, Peripheral nerve stimulators, invasive hemodynamic monitors, airway pressure, electronic humidifiers, fluid warmers, patient heating or cooling systems, infusion pumps, Doppler's, data recorders, or any other equipment system required in the common application of anesthesia.
  • Sets up and applies specialized anesthesia equipment, and identifies and resolves electronic or mechanical problems with these specialized anesthesia equipment systems which include rapid fluid administration systems, blood salvage and re-infusion systems.
  • Assembles systems for invasive monitoring according to protocols.
  • Assembles, tests, and operates specialized equipment for blood salvage and re-infusion during surgery.
  • Performs corrective action necessary to correct electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines.
  • Recognizes electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines which require corrective action by the manufacturer.
  • Determines the availability and appropriateness of replacement equipment, and completes installation of replacement equipment, as required. Inspects, tests, and installs replacement medical, compressed gas cylinders on anesthesia machines.
  • Identifies malfunctioning anesthesia equipment for repair by bio-medical services, generates work or maintenance requisitions, and delivers the equipment to biomedical services for corrective action and monitors equipment until returned to service.
  • Accesses the monthly biomedical services preventative maintenance listing, schedules all listed equipment, delivers equipment to biomedical services, collects and installs serviced items. Inventories and maintains an appropriate supply of medical, compressed gas cylinders used as emergency cylinder supply.
  • Maintains department files and records for equipment repairs, maintenance and service.
  • Maintains an inventory of specialized non-stock supplies for use in selected anesthesia applications. Inspects, assembles and tests equipment and monitors used by clinical anesthesia staff in patient transport, specialized anesthesia settings, such as radiology, or any other appropriate setting.
  • Assists clinical staff to transport anesthesia machines, monitors, and anesthesia supplies from the primary anesthesia sites. Inspects, tests and takes corrective action for the operation of medical gas scavenging systems associated with anesthesia gas machines.
  • Completes documentation for activity during blood salvage and re-infusion. Instructs others on the indications for use of and results obtained with blood salvage and re-infusion techniques.
  • Takes on-call assignments for the operation of blood recovery systems.
  • Receives supplies or parts, appropriately labels items as necessary and verifies the correctness of the product received.
  • Observes and follows appropriate infection control procedures for the assembly of sterile systems utilized in the performance of tasks.
  • Generates records and documentation.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Unit Specific Duties
  • Exchange drug trays both AM and PM for all Operating Rooms and Labor and Deliver.
  • Transports trays to Pharmacy.
  • Maintain all drug charges for Labor & Delivery and Main Operating Rooms, and Endoscopy.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for Labor and Delivery and Main Operating Rooms.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for Holding Area and Recovery Room when requested.
  • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.
  • High School diploma is required.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
  • Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.
  • ASATT Certification Preferred.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
