Overview
We are is seeking an experienced System Administrator 2 to support the provisioning, installation, configuration, documentation, operation, and maintenance of computer hardware, software, and related infrastructure. This role supports reliable IT operations through systems administration, technical troubleshooting, end-user support, monitoring, maintenance, and infrastructure optimization.

Candidates must physically reside within the United States for the duration of the assignment in accordance with Commonwealth of Virginia security policies. Job Description
The System Administrator 2 will provide systems administration, engineering, provisioning, operational support, maintenance, and technical troubleshooting across enterprise IT environments. The position requires familiarity with standard systems administration concepts, practices, and procedures and involves working under limited supervision with considerable latitude for independent judgment and initiative.
The selected professional will help maintain the integrity, availability, security, and performance of hardware, servers, operating systems, applications, and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include server installation and configuration, system monitoring, backup verification, account administration, Tier III support, patching, performance tuning, documentation, and infrastructure maintenance.
Responsibilities
Systems Administration & Technical Duties
  • Install new servers and rebuild existing servers in accordance with established standards and project or operational requirements.
  • Configure hardware, peripherals, services, system settings, directories, storage, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform daily system monitoring to verify the integrity and availability of hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes.
  • Review system and application logs and verify successful completion of scheduled jobs, including backups.
  • Conduct regular security monitoring to identify potential intrusions or other security concerns.
  • Perform and verify daily backup operations, ensuring required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media or network location.
  • Perform regular file archival and data purging as necessary.
  • Create, modify, and delete user accounts in response to approved requests.
  • Apply operating system patches and upgrades on a regular basis.
  • Upgrade administrative tools and utilities and configure or add new services as required.
  • Upgrade and configure system software and Asset Management applications based on project and operational requirements.

Technical Support & Troubleshooting
  • Provide Tier III and other advanced technical support to internal constituencies as requested.
  • Investigate, diagnose, and troubleshoot system, hardware, and software issues.
  • Diagnose and recover from hardware and software failures.
  • Coordinate and communicate with impacted stakeholders throughout issue investigation and resolution.
  • Provide support for desktop applications, desktops, laptops, and related hardware.
  • Manage and document technical issues through service ticket management processes.

Operations & Performance
  • Perform ongoing system performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization.
  • Configure CPU, memory, disk partitions, and other system resources as required.
  • Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning and infrastructure decision-making.
  • Support continuous innovation and improvement across systems administration, engineering, provisioning, operations, maintenance, and research and development activities.

Documentation & Process Support
  • Maintain operational, configuration, and other technical procedures.
  • Provide accurate documentation support for systems, processes, troubleshooting activities, and operational changes.
  • Follow established IT processes and contribute to effective process management and operational consistency.

Requirements:
  • Professional experience in systems administration or a related information technology field.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision while exercising initiative and independent judgment.
  • Working knowledge of standard systems administration concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to support hardware, software, infrastructure, desktop applications, and end users in an enterprise environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and communicate effectively with impacted stakeholders.
  • Candidate must physically reside within the United States throughout the assignment.
  • Candidate must be able to attend an in-person agency interview.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5 years of IT customer support/service experience.
  • 2 years of service ticket management experience.
  • 2 years of desktop application support experience.
  • 2 years of documentation support experience.
  • 2 years of desktop/laptop hardware support experience.
  • Must physically reside within the United States for the duration of the assignment in accordance with Commonwealth of Virginia security policies.
  • Must be able to participate in the required in-person agency interview.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years of server maintenance experience.
  • 2 years of network support experience.
  • 2 years of IT process management experience.
  • Experience with VMware ESXi 7.x or higher.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and/or 2025.
  • Experience supporting Linux environments.
