What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Infrastructure Support professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Infrastructure Support professional, you need a solid understanding of networking, hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting, and typically an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Active Directory, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware), and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a customer-focused mindset are essential soft skills. These competencies are crucial for ensuring system reliability, minimizing downtime, and providing timely technical support to keep business operations running smoothly.

What are the 4 types of IT infrastructure?

IT infrastructure support professionals work with four main types of IT infrastructure: hardware infrastructure, which includes servers, computers, and networking equipment; software infrastructure, such as operating systems and enterprise applications; network infrastructure, comprising routers, switches, and communication links; and data infrastructure, including data centers and storage systems. Understanding these components helps support and maintain reliable IT environments in organizations.

Which job is highest paying in IT field?

In the IT field, roles such as Chief Information Officer (CIO), IT Director, and Solutions Architect tend to be the highest paying, often earning six-figure salaries. Specialized roles like Cloud Architects, Security Directors, and Data Scientists with advanced certifications and experience also command high compensation.

What skills do you need for IT infrastructure?

IT Infrastructure Support professionals need strong technical skills in networking, servers, and operating systems, along with knowledge of hardware, software, and security protocols. Problem-solving, communication, and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues are essential. Certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA can enhance job prospects.

What are IT Infrastructure Support professionals?

IT Infrastructure Support professionals are responsible for maintaining, managing, and troubleshooting an organization’s core IT systems, such as servers, networks, hardware, and software. They ensure that all technology infrastructure runs efficiently, securely, and reliably to support business operations. Their duties may include installing new equipment, monitoring system performance, providing technical support, and implementing security measures. These professionals often work closely with other IT teams to resolve issues and plan for future technology needs.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

In the field of IT infrastructure support, engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually. High salaries in technology roles are more common in executive positions such as Chief Information Officer (CIO) or specialized roles like senior network architects with extensive experience, certifications, and leadership responsibilities. Most support engineers earn significantly less, with top-tier salaries reaching into the high six figures primarily in senior or executive roles.

What are some typical challenges faced by IT Infrastructure Support professionals, and how can they be addressed?

IT Infrastructure Support professionals often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex hardware and network issues, managing system outages under tight deadlines, and keeping up with rapidly changing technologies. Effective communication and prioritization skills are essential for handling multiple support tickets and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Staying proactive with regular system monitoring, ongoing training, and clear documentation helps address these challenges and ensures smooth IT operations.

Job description

Salal Credit Union is hiring an IT Infrastructure Support Engineer to help keep our technology environment reliable, secure, and ready to support employees and members every day. In this role, you'll support the networks, systems, cloud services, and infrastructure that power our headquarters and branch operations.

You'll be part of a collaborative IT Infrastructure team that manages enterprise technology systems across Salal. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys troubleshooting, improving systems, supporting users, partnering with vendors, and helping strengthen the stability and security of a modern financial services technology environment.

This is a hybrid position based at our Northgate headquarters, with Monday and Wednesday expected as in-office days. The schedule generally aligns with core business hours, with occasional after-hours or weekend support for infrastructure work, maintenance, or deployments.

What you'll do:

  • Support and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and wireless.
  • Monitor system and network performance, respond to alerts, and troubleshoot issues efficiently.
  • Assist with infrastructure deployments, upgrades, hardware installations, migrations, and technology lifecycle projects.
  • Support security tools and controls including firewalls, VPN, content filtering, patching, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Resolve infrastructure-related tickets in partnership with the Service Desk, IT teammates, business partners, and vendors.
  • Administer and support on-premise and cloud server infrastructure, including Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, DNS, and Microsoft 365.
  • Assist with virtual and cloud infrastructure maintenance including backups, recovery, system updates, and operational improvements.
  • Support technology projects throughout the organization, coordinating with internal teams, vendors, and contractors.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation, procedures, and system configurations following change management procedures.

What you'll bring:

  • 3+ years of experience in network and/or systems administration.
  • Hands-on experience with networking, Microsoft on-premises and cloud environments, patch management, system maintenance, and hardware support.
  • Associate's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users and collaborate effectively with colleagues, vendors, and business partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality support.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and adapting to new technologies and business needs.
  • Curious, proactive, and adaptable, with the ability to independently drive work forward while collaborating effectively on infrastructure projects, operational initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Cisco solutions.
  • CompTIA Network+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), or similar certification.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary range for this role is $90,035-$126,049 per year. This represents the entire base salary range for this position. Most candidates can expect a starting offer between $99,000-$111,500 per year depending on experience.
  • Ability to earn additional compensation through our profit-sharing bonus program.
  • Comprehensive benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance. Our high deductible plan options include a health savings account (HSA) with annual company-paid contributions.
  • Paid time off plans that include vacation, sick, and holiday time.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • 401(k) plan including an employer match.
  • Monthly transportation subsidy.
  • And more!
