What is an ISV?

ISV stands for Independent Software Vendor. An ISV is a company or individual that creates, markets, and sells software solutions that run on one or more computer hardware or operating system platforms. Unlike hardware manufacturers, ISVs focus on developing software products, which can range from applications and utilities to industry-specific solutions. ISVs often partner with larger technology companies to distribute or certify their software for compatibility. Their products are commonly used by businesses and end-users across various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ISV developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ISV Developer, you need strong software engineering skills, in-depth knowledge of programming languages, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), API integration, and software development tools is typically required. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and effective communication are critical soft skills for this role. These skills are essential for building robust, scalable software solutions that meet client needs and for maintaining effective partnerships with platform providers.

What are common challenges ISVs face when integrating their solutions with third-party platforms?

ISVs often encounter challenges such as managing compatibility across multiple versions of third-party platforms, adhering to varying integration standards, and keeping pace with frequent updates from platform providers. Additionally, ensuring robust data security and maintaining seamless interoperability can be complex, especially when working with established enterprise systems. Successful ISVs typically invest time in building strong relationships with platform vendors and prioritize continuous learning to stay updated on evolving APIs and best practices.

Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Partner Solutions Architect (PSA) to join the Technology Center of Excellence (Tech COE) team, focused on Independent Software Vendor (ISV) partners. In this role, you will serve as a trusted technical advisor to strategic ISV partners, helping them architect, build, and optimize their solutions on AWS. You will drive deep technical engagement with ISV partners to accelerate their cloud adoption, validate joint solutions, and enable go-to-market success through co-engineering efforts, technical enablement, and solution design.

As a PSA in the Tech COE, you will combine broad technical expertise with strong relationshipโ€‘building skills to influence partner technology decisions, identify strategic design wins, and deliver customer value through partnerโ€‘led solutions. You will work at the intersection of partner strategy and handsโ€‘on technical delivery โ€” bridging business outcomes with cloud architecture best practices.

Key job responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical advisor for assigned ISV partners, conducting architectural reviews, POCs, and Wellโ€‘Architected assessments
  • Design, build, and validate scalable cloudโ€‘native partner solutions through coโ€‘engineering efforts that drive strategic design wins (SDWs)
  • Develop reference architectures and bestโ€‘practice documentation for partner solutions
  • Enable partner teams through workshops, immersion days, and handsโ€‘on training; support readiness for ISV Accelerate, Competency programs, and Marketplace
  • Collaborate with AWS field teams (Account SAs, AMs, Specialist SAs) to drive partnerโ€‘led customer engagements and pipeline growth
  • Track engagement metrics, coโ€‘engineering milestones, and strategic design win attainment
  • Partner with AWS service teams to advocate for ISV requirements and influence roadmap priorities
  • Collaborate across APO on territory strategy, partner prioritization, and joint planning
  • Represent AWS at partner events and create technical content (blogs, case studies, whitepapers) showcasing partner success
About the team

Your day blends deep technical work with strategic partner engagement. Mornings often start with architecture discussions โ€” whiteboarding a multiโ€‘tenant design on EKS or reviewing a partnerโ€™s Marketplace listing readiness. Midโ€‘day, youโ€™re coโ€‘engineering handsโ€‘on with a partnerโ€™s team, building a POC that integrates Amazon Bedrock into their platform. Afternoons shift to crossโ€‘functional collaboration: syncing with field SAs on customer opportunities, advocating for partner requirements with AWS service teams, or presenting a recent strategic design win to your Tech COE peers. Youโ€™ll wrap up capturing field insights, updating engagement trackers, and drafting technical content. No two days are identical, but each balances technical depth, relationship building, and measurable partner impact.
