Job description

Major Responsibilities:
Instructional strategies:
  • Review with the principal, or designee, all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
  • Teach the lesson outlined and described in the "Substitute Teacher's Guide" as prepared by the absent teacher.
  • Consult as appropriate with the principal, or designee, before initiating any teaching or other procedures not specified in the "Substitute Teacher's Guide".

Classroom Management and Organization:
  • Maintain as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school as well as the classroom to which the substitute is assigned.
  • Assume responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class and elsewhere as appropriate.

Communication:
  • Report to the principal, or designee, upon arrival at the school building.
  • Report, in writing, on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day.
  • Ensure and uphold the confidentiality of student information, by discussing student issues only with campus administration.

Policy Implementation:
  • Follow all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
  • Be familiar with and follow all safety and campus emergency protocols
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written formats
  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Actively monitor students to ensure they stay on task
  • Flexibility to change assignments or classrooms
  • Assist with other duties throughout the campus, including cafeteria duty, monitoring buses, etc.

Requirements:
  1. Complete an online application.
  2. Pass a criminal background check.
  3. Be a high school graduate.
  4. Be at least 18 years of age. (Some restrictions apply to assignments given to substitutes under the age of 21.)
  5. Attend a mandatory Substitute Orientation.
  6. Be fingerprinted in the DPS Fact Clearinghouse.

EXPERIENCE:
Experience working with children and students.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Substitutes play a vital role in covering daily absences. The nature of a substitute's role requires availability and flexibility. Restrictions (location, subject, day of the week) on substitute profiles limit the school's ability to cover these absences and may impact the substitute's continued employment with the school.
MUST BE CONSISTENTLY AVAILABLE TO COVER ABSENCES AT LEAST ONE DAY PER WEEK
