The IRS is a government agency responsible for tax collection and enforcement, while a tax preparer is a professional who assists individuals and businesses in preparing their tax returns. Although both roles involve tax-related work, the IRS is a regulatory body, whereas tax preparers are private sector professionals. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and service roles within the tax industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IRS Agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IRS Agent, you need a solid background in accounting, tax law, and financial analysis, usually supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. Familiarity with tax preparation software, IRS auditing systems, and data analysis tools is essential. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for accurately enforcing tax laws, detecting discrepancies, and ensuring compliance in complex financial environments.

What are IRS agents and what do they do?

IRS agents are employees of the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. government agency responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing tax laws. Their primary duties include reviewing tax returns, conducting audits, and investigating potential tax fraud or evasion. IRS agents also provide assistance to taxpayers, answer questions about tax regulations, and help ensure compliance with federal tax laws. They play a vital role in maintaining the nation's tax system and supporting government operations.

How much do IRS employees get paid?

IRS employees' salaries vary based on their job position, experience, and location, but generally range from around $50,000 to over $100,000 annually for specialized roles. Entry-level positions often start at the GS-5 to GS-7 pay grades, while experienced agents and managers can earn higher salaries, with opportunities for overtime and benefits. The IRS also offers training and certification programs relevant to tax and accounting skills.

How can I get a job for the IRS?

To get a job with the IRS, applicants should review current openings on the USAJOBS website, create a profile, and submit an application that highlights relevant skills such as accounting, finance, or administration. A background check and passing relevant exams or assessments are often required, along with meeting minimum age and education requirements.

Is it hard to get into the IRS?

Getting a job at the IRS can be competitive, as it often requires passing civil service exams, background checks, and meeting specific qualifications. Candidates typically need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and relevant experience or education in areas like accounting, law, or finance.

Is IRS hiring still frozen?

The IRS has periodically paused and resumed hiring based on budget allocations and staffing needs. Currently, the agency is actively recruiting for various positions, including tax examiners and customer service roles, with ongoing job openings available on the official IRS careers website.

What are some common challenges faced by IRS agents and how can new hires effectively manage them?

IRS agents often encounter challenges such as managing complex tax cases, staying updated with constantly changing tax regulations, and handling high workloads, especially during tax season. New hires can effectively manage these challenges by participating in ongoing training programs, actively collaborating with experienced colleagues, and utilizing available resources such as internal knowledge bases. Building strong organizational skills and seeking mentorship within the team can also help ease the transition and promote long-term success in the role.

Job description

Responsibilities
The Best BD Executives Don't Chase Deals. They Build the Relationships That Become Them.
Peraton's Federal Civilian (FedCiv) business is growing - fast - and we're looking for a Business Development Executive to lead the growth of our Infrastructure Services account supporting accounts such as Treasury and IRS. This is a role for a BD professional who knows this customer community cold, has spent years earning trust inside it, and is ready to turn those relationships into a portfolio of meaningful, measurable wins.
If you've built a reputation as the BD professional Treasury and IRS leaders actually take the meeting with - and you want a platform that will back your biggest plays - let's talk.
Why This Role Stands Out
  • A customer in full modernization mode. Treasury and IRS are investing billions in digital infrastructure, cloud, cyber, and taxpayer experience. Your pipeline won't run dry.
  • Real deal size. You'll be supporting single-award captures of $50M+ and helping shape pursuits $100M and beyond.
  • A seat at the FedCiv Growth table. You'll partner directly with operational and functional leaders across the company - not pitch ideas into a void.
  • Strategic, not transactional. This role rewards the BD professional who shapes requirements early, builds market intelligence, and runs a disciplined campaign - not the one waiting for the RFP to drop.

What You'll Do
  • Own the pipeline. Create, identify, develop, and qualify opportunities aligned to Peraton's strategic campaigns - driving meaningful, measurable revenue growth.
  • Hit the number. Achieve acquisition and sales goals through new business wins, recompetes, teaming, and organic program growth.
  • Build the plan. Develop and continuously refresh a strategic growth plan and associated pipeline, consistent with corporate campaign strategy.
  • Be the customer's trusted advisor. Serve as the primary interface with the customer community for assigned opportunities - and build real, durable relationships through effective, consistent communication.
  • Shape what's coming. Influence requirements and acquisition strategies before the formal solicitation lands - the work that separates a good BD professional from a great one.
  • Hunt for what's next. Identify and target new markets, adjacencies, and partnerships that fit Peraton's discriminators.
  • Run a disciplined process. Embrace Peraton's Business Acquisition Process and effectively manage and communicate opportunities, pursuit plans, and risk to leadership.
  • Bring solutions to life. Work with internal technical and program management teams to translate capabilities into RFIs, market surveys, white papers, briefings, and major event demonstrations that resonate with the customer.

Qualifications
What You Bring
Must-Haves:
• 12+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years in business development or capture focused on Treasury, IRS, and other federal civilian agencies
• Proven track record of winning single-award deals of $50M+
• Demonstrated success supporting opportunity pipelines and captures of $100M+
• A deep, current understanding of customer activities, mission priorities, and acquisition dynamics - not headlines, but real insight
• Current, broad market relationships and proven success building relationships with strategic teaming partners (prime and sub)
• Matured relationships across federal government agencies
• Ability to think strategically and operate independently
• Exceptional business acumen, integrity, professionalism, and high energy
• A highly effective communicator equally at home with C-suite executives, program managers, and federal customers
• U.S. Citizenship required; must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust t clearance (or higher)
• Local to the DC Metro area, with willingness to travel as needed for customer meetings and conferences
Nice-to-Haves:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in an Information Technology or related field
• Active Secret security clearance (or higher)
• An established personal network across Treasury, IRS, and the federal civilian BD community
• Experience navigating complex teaming ecosystems on infrastructure and IT modernization pursuits
