BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC office in Miami has been serving the community since the 1960s. Over the decades, IRC in Miami has provided critical support to refugees, asylees, survivors of human trafficking, unaccompanied minors, immigrant youth, and their families.
SCOPE OF IMMIGRANT YOUTH ENGLISH INTERN WORK: The Immigrant Youth English Cafe Intern will support our Miami-Dade-based Immigrant Youth team in delivering essential services to immigrant children and their families. Key responsibilities include facilitating and leading the online English Café initiative, meant for youth and adults to practice their English skills. Please note that all internship positions are unpaid, and we are currently considering candidates in South Florida only.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • The intern will learn how to design and deliver project-based social services.

  • The intern will develop leadership skills.

  • The intern will develop skills in client empowerment and advocacy.

  • The intern will learn cultural sensitivity.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead conversational English skills for youth and adults.

  • Be punctual with a high sense of responsibility.

  • Prepare the topic, materials and talking points for each session.

  • Plan and schedule the English Café.

  • Lead several weekly English Café sessions.

  • Assist with creating a promotional campaign to engage clients in the English Café.

  • Assist with outreach to local organizations to help establish partnerships within the community.

  • Help with data collection and tracking related to the English Café attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Passionate about language education

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

  • Organized with attention to detail

  • Able to work independently and under pressure

  • An interest in international issues

  • Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multicultural setting

  • Computer literacy - preferably with PC systems

  • Access to internet

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must pass a background check

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Minimum commitment of 15 hours per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.

  • Submit intern hours on volunteer dashboard

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

The internship will be filled on a rolling basis. We will continue to accept applications until August 14th, 2026, or until the position is filled, whichever occurs first. Internship will begin the week of September 8th, 2026.
This position will report to the Immigrant Youth Program Supervisor.
