What is an IoT Program Manager?

IoT Program Managers oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of Internet of Things (IoT) projects within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage timelines and budgets, and ensure that IoT solutions meet business objectives and technical requirements. Their role involves bridging the gap between technical teams, stakeholders, and clients to deliver connected products and services efficiently. Successful IoT Program Managers possess strong project management skills, technical knowledge of IoT systems, and the ability to navigate complex, rapidly-evolving technology landscapes.

How does an IoT Program Manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver successful projects?

An IoT Program Manager works closely with engineering, product management, cybersecurity, and operations teams to ensure smooth project execution. They facilitate communication between hardware and software teams to align on timelines, technical requirements, and integration points. Regular meetings and status updates help identify and resolve any roadblocks early. Additionally, IoT Program Managers often coordinate with external vendors and stakeholders to ensure interoperability and compliance, making strong collaboration and organizational skills essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IoT Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IoT Program Manager, you need a solid background in project management, systems engineering, and IoT technologies, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with IoT platforms, cloud services, Agile methodologies, and certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for successfully delivering complex IoT projects on time and within budget while aligning technical teams and business objectives.

Great company. Great people. Great opportunities.

If you’d like the chance to make your mark with the world’s largest equipment rental provider, come build your future with United Rentals!

As a Product Development Manager (PDM) within its Advanced Solutions Group (ASG), you will be focused on driving innovation and maturing ASG's offering portfolio by piloting, enhancing and preparing new solutions for deployment across the organization. The PDM collaborates with internal teams and external partners to identify promising technologies, develop business cases, test prototypes, and support the company and Digital Customer Success team in go-to-market (GTM) initiatives. The successful integration of these solutions reinforces United Rentals’ position as a differentiated strategic industry partner.

What you’ll do:

Lead product development lifecycle from concept through pilot execution and maturity into scalable offerings:

  • Work cross-functionally with ASG team members and field leadership to pilot and enhance innovative jobsite solutions.

  • Collaborate with regional teams to ensure readiness for deployment and maximize adoption across the organization.

  • Work closely with Sourcing and IT to ensure solution viability and compatibility within operational infrastructure.

Partner with internal and external stakeholders to prototype and evaluate new technologies leveraging insights to guide product refinement:

  • Identify emerging technologies that align with customer needs and support core business objectives focused on safety, productivity, and sustainability.

  • Pilot new technologies with internal teams and select customers to validate effectiveness and scalability.

  • Continuously enhance solutions based on field feedback and real-world performance to ensure maximum customer value.

Support the development of GTM strategy and coordinate rollout plans with the Customer Success team to ensure seamless implementation.

  • Act as one of ASG's SME's and single point of contact for evolving portfolio of innovative technologies and solutions.

  • Support the creation and presentation of strategic proposals, including financial assessments, analysis of alternatives, and market evaluations.

  • Strengthen relationships with sales teams to support field-level engagement and value delivery.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; advanced technical or business training a plus

  • 5+ years in product development, project management, or R&D

  • Experience introducing and managing complex technical solutions within customer environments

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic proposals and implement business-focused rollout plans

  • Strong familiarity with construction technologies, including IoT, AI, and sensor-based systems

  • Background in telematics and connected technologies such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, GPS, cellular, access management, robotics, and RFID preferred

  • Proven success in cross-functional collaboration and team-oriented environments

  • Familiarity with United Rentals’ internal systems and existing relationships across multiple regions is highly advantageous

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint and Excel

  • Solid understanding of civil construction practices

  • Familiarity with site access, equipment access, and worker insight offerings
