What is an IoT full stack developer?

An IoT Full Stack Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains both the hardware and software components of Internet of Things (IoT) systems. They work across the entire technology stack, from device firmware and embedded systems to cloud platforms, databases, and user interfaces. These developers are skilled in programming, networking, and data management, enabling the integration and communication of physical devices with digital applications. Their role is crucial in building seamless, secure, and scalable IoT solutions that collect, process, and present data to users or other systems.

What are some common challenges IoT full stack developers face when integrating hardware and software components?

IoT Full Stack Developers often encounter challenges when bridging the gap between embedded hardware and cloud-based applications. Key issues include ensuring reliable communication between devices and servers, managing security risks across multiple layers, and handling large volumes of data generated by connected devices. Additionally, developers must coordinate with hardware engineers, firmware developers, and backend teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance. Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills are crucial for overcoming these technical and collaborative hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IoT full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IoT Full Stack Developer, you need expertise in both hardware and software integration, proficiency in programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and C/C++, and a solid understanding of networking protocols. Experience with IoT platforms (such as AWS IoT or Azure IoT), database management, and familiarity with embedded systems and cloud services are typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for building reliable, scalable IoT solutions that bridge devices, data, and user interfaces while ensuring seamless collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Iot Full Stack Developer vs Iot Software Engineer?

Job description

Analytical Applications Full-Stack Developer

The Opportunity:

As a full-stack developer, you can resolve a problem with a complete end-to-end solution in a fast, agile environment. If you're looking for the chance to not just develop software, but to help create a system that will make a difference, we need you on our team. We're looking for a developer like you with the skills needed to develop software and systems from vision to production ready.

This role is more than just coding. As a full-stack developer at Booz Allen, you'll use your passion to learn new tools and techniques and identify needed system improvements. You'll help clients overcome their most difficult challenges using the latest architectural approaches, tools, and technologies. You'll help make sure the solution developed by the team considers the current architecture and operating environment, as well as future functionality and enhancements.

We are seeking a mid-level full-stack developer to design, develop, and deploy modern web applications supporting secure AWS environments operating at IL-4 and IL-5. This role is critical to transforming mission requirements into functional prototypes and production-ready systems that serve our users in regulated DoD environments.

You will work across the entire application stack from database design and back-end API development to responsive front-end interfaces, using modern frameworks and tools. This position requires someone who can bring innovative ideas to the table, architect scalable solutions, and deliver high-quality code that meets both functional and security requirements for cloud-deployed applications. You'll leverage your experience with AI and ML integration and building intelligent features into web applications as we expand our AI-enabled capabilities.
How You'll Contribute:

  • Design and develop responsive front-end applications using React, TypeScript (TSX), and modern build tools such as Vite.

  • Build and maintain back-end services and APIs using FastAPI.

  • Architect and implement database schemas, queries, and ORM integrations using SQLAlchemy and Django ORM.

  • Containerize applications using Docker and orchestrate multi-service applications with Docker Compose.

  • Translate stakeholder and technical requirements into working prototypes and iteratively develop them into production systems.

  • Develop large-scale applications with complex integrations, maintaining code quality and architectural consistency.

  • Implement RESTful APIs that integrate with external services and data sources.

  • Collaborate with DevOps engineers to ensure applications are deployment-ready for IL-4 and IL-5 environments.

  • Integrate AI/ML models and services into web applications, including LLM APIs and intelligent features.

  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following best practices and security guidelines.

  • Contribute innovative ideas and technical solutions to improve application architecture, user experience, and development workflows.

  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and Agile development processes.

  • Support application security requirements and remediate vulnerabilities identified through security scanning.

You Have:

  • 2+ years of experience designing, modifying, developing, writing, and implementing software programming applications

  • 2+ years of experience in full-stack web application development with React, TypeScript, and Python frameworks such as FastAPI

  • 2+ years of experience with Docker and Docker Compose for containerized application development and deployment

  • 2+ years of experience with ORMs such as SQLAlchemy and relational database design and optimization

  • 2+ years of experience with RESTful API design, implementation, and integration patterns

  • 1+ years of experience with modern front-end build tools and workflows such as Vite or Webpack

  • Ability to develop large-scale applications with multiple integrated components

  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance

  • Bachelor's degree or 5+ years of experience in software development in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience deploying applications into IL-4 or higher secure environments

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and deployment automation

  • Experience with WebSocket implementations for real-time applications

  • Experience integrating LLM APIs such as Ollama or Amazon Bedrock into production applications

  • Knowledge of AWS cloud services, Lambda, S3, and serverless architectures

  • Knowledge of modern front-end state management solutions such as Redux or React Query

  • Knowledge of microservices architecture, distributed systems, and event-driven patterns

  • Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code and cloud deployment patterns

  • Secret clearance

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
