What is the difference between Ion vs Chemist?

AspectIon
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require certification in specific fields
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, research facilities
Industry UsageCommonly used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries
Job FocusHandling, analyzing, and managing ions and ionic compounds

While an Ion typically refers to a charged particle involved in chemical processes, a Chemist is a professional who studies and works with chemicals, including ions. Chemists often have degrees in chemistry and perform research, analysis, and development tasks. The roles overlap in laboratory settings, but an Ion is more of a subject or component, whereas a Chemist is a professional working with various chemical entities, including ions.

What are some common challenges faced by ion implantation technicians in a semiconductor fabrication environment?

Ion implantation technicians often work in cleanroom environments where precision and adherence to safety protocols are critical. A common challenge is troubleshooting and maintaining complex ion implantation equipment, which requires strong technical skills and attention to detail. Technicians must also adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and processes, and regularly collaborate with engineers and quality control teams to ensure product specifications are met. Effective communication and the ability to work under pressure are essential for success in this role.

What are ion jobs and what do people in this role do?

Ion jobs typically refer to positions related to the field of ion science, such as ion beam technicians, ion implantation engineers, or roles in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry involving ions. Professionals in these roles work with devices or processes that manipulate or measure ions—charged particles—often in the context of semiconductor manufacturing, materials science, or chemical analysis. Their responsibilities can include operating ion implantation systems, maintaining and calibrating mass spectrometers, interpreting data, and ensuring quality control in production environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ion Implantation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ion Implantation Engineer, you need a solid background in physics or electrical engineering, knowledge of semiconductor processes, and typically a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with ion implantation systems, cleanroom protocols, and data analysis tools such as SEM or TEM is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure precise device fabrication, efficient troubleshooting, and effective collaboration in high-tech manufacturing environments.

Job description

Description
Job Title Experimental Ion Beam Physicist 2/3 (Scientist 2/3)
Location Los Alamos, NM, US
Organization Name AOT-AE/Applied Electrodynamics
Minimum Salary
Maximum Salary
What You Will Do
This position is open for external candidates only to apply.
The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division Applied Electrodynamics (AOT-AE) group is seeking a Scientist 2/3 to provide expertise, support, and technical leadership in all aspects of H+ and H- ion beam, physics, beamline development, optimization, operation, and diagnostics. We look for candidates with expertise in beam physics starting with the ion source, beam propagation, beam manipulation, acceleration from very low energies, and ion beam measurements. This particular position will be funded by the LANSCE Accelerator Modernization Project (LAMP) and will require the candidate to engage in experimental and developmental activities, including operation and oversight of various test stands associated with LAMP.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Scientist 2 ($106,400 - $176,000):
The selected Scientist 2 will provide expertise, support, and technical leadership in one or more of the following areas:
  • Design, construction, and operation of ion accelerators incorporating H+ or H- ion sources, radiofrequency quadrupoles, drift-tube linacs, and RF accelerating structures.
  • Design, construction and operation of test stands of relevance to LAMP project, such as the radiofrequency-quadrupole test stand (RFQTS);
  • Design, construction and operation of test stands of relevance to LAMP project, such as the LAMP in the ADEF Tunnel (LAT) demonstration test stand;
  • Development of ion beam diagnostics for the relevant test stands.
Scientist 3 ($128,000 - $215,900):
The selected Scientist 3 will provide expertise, support, and technical leadership in one or more of the following areas:
  • Working with computational scientists on developing understanding of the ion beam dynamics in ion accelerator test stands;
  • Development of new projects and leading proposals in their area of expertise.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in operation of ion sources, ion source test facilities, and/or ion beam accelerator facilities similar to those required to demonstrate key operating parameters of the LAMP ion source.
  • Demonstrated experience in using ion beam diagnostics.
  • Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding the expectations of customers and stakeholders in a research organization focused on particle accelerators and in meeting commitments and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills, with both internal and external collaborators and sponsors.
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3 level:
  • Demonstrated ability to design, commission, and operate ion accelerator systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, commissioning, and operation of the ion beam diagnostics
  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical programs in partnership with others.
Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Preference will be given to candidates with a Master's or a PhD degrees.
Education/Experience at Level 3: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD degree.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage, either directly or matrixed, a small group of scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budget for a research project.
  • Demonstrated success in setting priorities for and leading efficient, graded implementation of safety, security and safeguards, environmental management, and other core Laboratory business requirements.
  • A current Q clearance, or the ability to obtain such, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
