Internship Substation Construction information

What is an internship substation construction position?

Internship Substation Construction positions are entry-level, temporary roles designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience working on the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical substations. Interns typically assist with tasks like inspecting equipment, supporting engineers and technicians, learning safety protocols, and participating in project planning. These roles help interns understand how substations function within the electrical grid and provide opportunities to develop technical and teamwork skills. Such internships are valuable stepping stones for those pursuing careers in electrical engineering or utility construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship substation construction professional?

To thrive in an Internship Substation Construction role, you need a foundational understanding of electrical engineering concepts, safety protocols, and project management, typically supported by relevant coursework or pursuit of a degree in electrical or civil engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, construction management tools, and safety certification (such as OSHA 10) is often expected. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with diverse construction teams and ensuring safety compliance. These skills and qualifications are vital for maintaining operational efficiency, safety, and quality standards on substation construction sites.

What types of hands-on experiences can I expect during an internship in substation construction?

As an intern in substation construction, you will typically gain exposure to a wide range of field activities, such as assisting with equipment installation, learning to read and interpret electrical schematics, and observing safety protocols on active job sites. You may also support experienced engineers and technicians in tasks like testing equipment, documenting construction progress, and coordinating with contractors. This hands-on involvement helps you develop practical skills and a strong understanding of substation construction processes, laying a solid foundation for a career in the power and utilities sector.

What is the difference between Internship Substation Construction vs Substation Technician?

AspectInternship Substation ConstructionSubstation Technician
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate of electrical or civil engineeringHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentOn-site construction sites, assisting with installation and maintenanceFieldwork at substations, performing inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs
Industry UsageEntry-level training role during education or early careerFull-time role responsible for ongoing substation operations

Internship Substation Construction provides hands-on experience during training or education, focusing on assisting with substation installation. Substation Technicians are experienced workers responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting substations. The internship is a learning opportunity, while the technician role involves active, ongoing responsibilities in substation operations.

Job description

Nexus Engineering Group is employee-owned, full-service, and built by the people who do the work. As a Substation Engineer, youโ€™ll help design, analyze, and deliver electrical substation projects for utility, industrial, and power delivery clients โ€” with exposure across the full breadth of substation engineering.

Youโ€™ll support the design, analysis, and execution of substation projects from planning through construction, contributing across disciplines โ€” physical design, protection and control, engineering studies, technical documentation, field investigations, and construction support. Itโ€™s a broad, hands-on role for a collaborative problem-solver who wants to grow across complex infrastructure projects while delivering high-quality engineering.

Why Nexus

Youโ€™ll own a piece of what you build. Nexus is employee-owned through our ESOP, so the value you help create comes back to you โ€” not just outside shareholders. We invest in early-career engineers and give them real work from the start.

What you can expect
  • Employee ownership (ESOP) โ€” build equity in the firm as it grows
  • Broad exposure across substation disciplines โ€” physical design, P&C, studies, and field work โ€” to help you find your path
  • Mentorship from senior engineers who review your work and help you grow
  • Full-service EPCm exposure, from concept through startup, across a diverse client base
  • Career paths that grow with you โ€” toward technical leadership, project management, or discipline leadership
  • Flexible work arrangements where business needs allow
What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Develop and revise engineering deliverables โ€” drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Support the design and execution of substation projects from planning through construction.
  • Apply industry, client, utility, and company standards to your engineering work products.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams โ€” engineers, designers, project managers, clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations, design reviews, and construction-support activities.
  • Assist with equipment selection, design development, engineering analyses, and technical problem-solving.
  • Communicate project status, technical issues, and design recommendations to project stakeholders.
  • Deliver quality work within established schedules and budgets, and contribute to the Substation groupโ€™s technical standards and best practices.
What Weโ€™re Looking For Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of relevant engineering experience โ€” utility, power delivery, electrical infrastructure, or substation engineering, including internship or co-op experience.
  • Understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and engineering design principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, standards, and equipment documentation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting utility, power delivery, industrial, or substation engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, CYME, CDEGS, Inventor, or similar design and analysis tools.
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Field, construction, commissioning, utility operations, internship, or co-op experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or progress toward professional licensure.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work is performed in a hybrid environment that includes office, remote, and active project-site settings. This role may require:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer workstation, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Periodic travel to substations, construction sites, client facilities, and project locations
  • Site visits that may involve exposure to outdoor weather, energized electrical equipment, noise, heavy equipment, and active construction environments; appropriate PPE must be worn
  • The ability to walk uneven terrain, navigate outdoor substation yards, climb stairs, and access project-site areas, with or without reasonable accommodation
